New year, new goals.
We welcome another year of coming up with #beautygoals so we can define and embrace the beauty that’s uniquely ours. However, coming up with goals is not simple. We have to narrow down what we want to achieve or let go of, and how we plan to reach our goals.
Aside from that, our beauty goals should be something actionable and that we are ready to make efforts for. One cannot simply wish to have clearer skin if they do not cleanse to wash off dirt and excess oil!
To help you, our very own Dr. Pie Cabrera reveals her 2023 #beautygoals from which you can take a cue!
Wear sunscreen diligently
There are (very!) rare days when even our skin expert can miss out on sunscreen. When it is incredibly busy for Dr. Pie to slather sunscreen before leaving her house, her best practice is to bring sunscreen with her so she can apply it anytime she can.
This way, she can also reapply sunscreen when this wears off.
Give more attention to hair health
Dr. Pie aims to put more TLC on her hair, as much as she does to her skin, this year. She plans on doing this by choosing the right shampoo for her hair type, giving it a trim every now and then to prevent split ends, and gently brushing the hair and massaging the scalp. These simple actions can help maintain her hair in tip-top shape.
Following a skincare routine to a tee
This is one of Dr. Pie’s long-term practices that she swears by to keep her youthful look. It is her goal to keep and never miss her skincare routine to ensure that it is healthy and stays young as long as possible.
Treat herself to a me-time
Even Dr. Pie can get busy as she juggles being a doctor, mom and businesswoman. This year, it is Dr. Pie’s #beautygoal to set aside time for herself to ensure that no stressors and free radicals damage her body and skin.
This includes getting a facial treatment, doing exercises every day, taking time to enjoy nature — basically anything that keeps her in track, balances her stress levels, and helps her avoid being overwhelmed.
We hope Dr. Pie’s #beautygoals help you build up your own goals. To personalize it, take some quiet time and reflect on how you approach taking care of your self. Do you use the correct product for your skin type? Do you brush your hair gently? Do you get enough, quality sleep?
Depending on how you answer these questions (and more!), you can set goals and be intentional in achieving them. For matters that may need professional opinions such as the prolonged burden of acne, removal of scars, and more, make sure to see a dermatologist.

The chin is a subtle but defining facial feature that makes people attractive – sadly, most people don’t know this! A well-defined chin gives the face a nice structure, symmetry and helps differentiate the face from the neck.
However, not everyone is gifted with a “strong chin” which looks good with the rest of their facial features. Some may have chins that are narrow, wide, too elongated, or short. If any of these bother you, Chin Augmentation is an option you can consider.
Here, we’ll tackle the two types of Chin Augmentation: surgical and non-surgical. Which procedure fits you best depends on your needs, goals, and what you can allot when it comes to budget and time. But both are highly effective with what they promise.
Surgical Chin Augmentation
This is the classic way of enhancing the chin which uses incision and implant – and results to a dramatic change. A short incision is created under the chin or inside the mouth (numbed with anaesthesia) and a sculpted implant, usually made of silicone, is placed in the space made. The implant is highly customizable, and looks and feels like natural chin bone.
This procedure is one and done — it can last a lifetime and may not require reconstructing unless the patient wants change or to remove it.
Non-surgical Chin Augmentation
This procedure does not involve creating incisions. Rather, a filler is inserted into the skin to enhance the chin area and even jawline contours.
The patient can see immediate improvement with minimal downtime, mostly due to swelling. This is generally safe and effective for most patients, especially when done with high-grade fillers. Because this uses a Dermal Filler, which are usually made with collagen or hyaluronic acid, effects wear off after a certain time and will need periodic re-treatment.
To summarize:
Surgical Chin Augmentation | Non-surgical Chin Augmentation | |
Procedure length | One hour | Less than an hour |
Cost | Higher costs but more cost-effective | Lower costs but require repeat sessions |
Results | Long lasting | Instant but temporary results depending on the fillers used |
Recovery time | Between 7 – 10 days; swelling and bruising may persist for a few more weeks | No downtime; swelling and redness may occur for a week |
We hope this blog gives you an idea which among the two ways of augmenting the chin can meet your needs and goals. As always, an expert’s opinion is necessary to get the best possible result. Book with us today for a consultation and you’ll achieve the chin if your dreams.
When it comes to facial beautification, we notice most patients clearly know how they want their nose, jaws, or lips enhanced. But did you know that improving these facial features is only a part of achieving facial harmony?
The chin is one of the key facial areas that can determine a good facial proportion and Chin Augmentation can help achieve this.
Who should consider Chin Augmentation?
People may come not to like how their chin naturally looks or feel that it looks out of place compared to the rest of their facial features. The reasons for getting chin augmentation may vary but are often the following:
Chin looks crooked
Chin is too round making the face look wide and short
Chin is too pointy and the face may look long and narrow
Chin projects backward to the neck and may cause a double chin look
How does Chin Augmentation work?
This procedure works by “fine-tuning” the chin area to alter and improve its appearance by adding volume and refining the shape. Cosmetic surgeons would take a look at the patient’s chin and may recommend a non-surgical or surgical procedure depending on the outcome desired.
Non-surgical Chin Augmentation
People who want to enhance their chin but are not quite ready yet to undergo the knife may opt for non-surgical Chin Augmentation through Dermal Fillers. This can restore volume, hydration, and structural support to the chin. Patients should be able to manage their expectations as minimal enhancements can be done and results are temporary if done through non-surgical Chin Augmentation.
The good side is that it requires little to no downtime and a good procedure to undergo until you are ready and confident for permanent results.
Surgical Chin Augmentation
This type of augmentation uses implants to give more projection to the chin. A small incision is created underneath the chin or inside the mouth and an implant, usually either silicone or Gore-tex, is placed on the bone.
Since the incision will be stitched, mild swelling may occur for a few days to a week, and patients are advised to follow post-treatment care.
At Manny and Pie Calayan Clinic, we know how this subtle procedure can give a big and lasting impact on your confidence. That is why we mastered the “art” of chin augmentation to professionally give you the beautiful chin you deserve!

When it comes to defying aging skin, our seasoned expert Dr. Pie Cabrera is highly knowledgeable and we trust what she says! We sat with her to know the secret to her timeless and youthful look.
“The best age to use anti-aging products is 20 to 30 years old because this is the time when your skin starts losing collagen. The effects of our sun exposure during our teenage years start to manifest in fine lines under the eyes or sunspots or freckles. At first, we think it’s cute, but trust me, it’s not,” Dr. Pie mentions. Below, she narrows down 5 steps on how you should include them in your anti-aging routine.
Gently cleanse the skin
We don’t want you to wash your skin until it’s “squeaky clean”! It’s critical to be gentle and use gentle cleansers when you wash off excess oil, grime, and other stuff sitting on the surface of your skin. Pollution that settles on your skin after a day outside (or inside!) can create free radical damage to your skin. That said, never skip cleansing even if you’re tired or tipsy.
Be committed to wearing sunscreen
Known medical journals have confirmed that wearing sunscreen reduces skin aging when worn on a daily basis and re-applied throughout the day. It is best to use a broad spectrum sunscreen to make sure that neither UVA or UVB gets through the skin and causes damage such as losing elasticity, sun spots, and even skin cancer. Add wearing protective clothing and seeking shade to this combination to keep your skin extra safe.
Pat in serums
Serums are often oil- or water-based liquids that are potent, highly concentrated, and easily absorbed by the skin. This is the concentration it comes in because as we age, essential nutrients in the skin gradually deplete making the skin dry. That is why these should be applied through patting and not rubbing because consistent rubbing can form fine lines and wrinkles over time (this actually goes for all skincare products!).
Moisturize according to your skin type
Now, you might be asking “Won’t the serum suffice?” Well, it works better with a moisturizer! Usually a cream-based product, the moisturizer seals in hydration on damp skin or after patting in a serum of your choice. Moisturizers can stimulate skin renewal, keeping the skin glowy and radiant. Keep in mind your skin type so your moisturizer may reap its best benefits even before the signs of aging show!
Invest in age-defying procedures
Is there a need for a procedure when we’re still at the prejuvenation stage? We believe that taking an extra step always pays off! We have two MPCC procedures in mind that are perfect for defying skin aging: Botox and Detox Drip.
Botox can prevent the early appearance of fine lines and wrinkles when introduced to the muscles early on. It “freezes” the muscles and therefore, they cannot contract and produce creases on the skin. Detox Drip, on the other hand, works as a preventive procedure by stopping free radicals from damaging not only the skin but the body as well. This works by introducing a potent mixture of glutathione and essential minerals that can keep the body healthy.
Keep these 5 steps in mind and you won’t be looking a day older for a long time! The best thing yet – you can get Botox at 10% OFF on ALL areas and Detox Drip at a steal price of Php15,000 for 10 sessions! Avail today until August 15, 2022.
We love any product or service that can allow us to retain our youthful look! That said, we are keen on rejuvenation to keep aging skin away. But more recently, we have heard of prejuvenation. Which leaves many asking – what are the differences? Which is better? Which is more important?
Let’s go ahead and differentiate the two.
Rejuvenation
Rejuvenation is the umbrella term that covers any action to make something youthful and vigorous again. In the context we are using the term rejuvenation, it is to restore the skin’s former condition that is: firmer, smoother, and youthful. The action is reactionary, meaning the skin has somehow started aging, showing fine lines, wrinkles, jowls, and many others. People in their 40s, 50s, and onwards do this to reverse the effects of time.
Prejuvenation
On the other hand, prejuvenation is all about prevention and taking a proactive role before the skin starts aging. Ever heard of “prevention is better than cure”? While the skin will eventually age, whether we like it or not, there are ways we can push back natural processes and slow them down. People in their early 20s until their 30s will see the benefits of taking care of their skin earlier than everyone else.
So, which is more important?
We believe both are important as these are necessary for different phases of our life. One for when we are young and can chase the fountain of youth; the other for when Father Time has caught up.
BUT, we recommend starting early in your skincare game to reap its benefits for as long as possible. We choose prejuvenation!
Starting early can be as simple as religiously applying sunscreen every day so it doesn’t damage your skin. But if you want to bring your A-game in delaying aging, we’ve listed services that are common treatments that you can try!
Botox
This household name is a known rejuvenation treatment that’s used to relax and soften wrinkles. But how does it work as a prejuvenation treatment? Botox is injected in areas where wrinkling is prone to delay the development of fine lines and wrinkles by preventing frequent muscle contraction.
Skin Restoring System
Our skin, just like the rest of the body, needs water to function properly. Science found that dehydrated skin will display and speed up premature aging, decreased elasticity, and more fine lines and wrinkles. Skin Restoring System introduces hydration and nutrients (through a potent serum) into the skin to keep it young by encouraging healthy skin regeneration, fighting free radicals, and making the skin look more radiant, firmer, and smoother.
Royal Facial
Even young people get a taste of dull and almost saggy skin due to lifestyle choices such as constant sun exposure without sunscreen or drastic weight loss. Royal Facial is fit for contouring the face and giving it a lift. This treatment can also brighten the skin and smoothen its texture.
Detox Drip
We encounter things and engage in activities that can be harmful to our skin such as airborne chemicals, alcohol, too much sugar intake, etc. Our Detox Drip introduces glutathione with antioxidants that effectively cleanse the body from free radicals. This can also help strengthen the immune system, lighten the skin tone and remove impurities that can damage the skin.
Now that you’ve got a quick round-up of prejuvenation treatments, we’re here to let you in for a little secret! Starting July 15 until August 30, 2022, our Manny & Pie Calayan Clinic prejuvenation treatments: Botox, Skin Restoring System, Royal Facial, and Detox Drip will be available at a discounted price!
We can’t wait for you to get started with your age-defying journey. Don’t forget to slide through our inbox to book these services!
Father’s Day is a day when we honor dads for their knowledge, care and love throughout the years. While greeting dad and having a lunch out is a good enough celebration; you can take the high road and make this year’s Father’ Day extra special with our list of 5 ways to show dad your appreciation:
1. Cook dad’s favorite food
Most parents put their children first – that means your favorite dishes get served on the table. But, what about dad’s favorite food?
Father’s Day is a good excuse to bring out a trusty recipe of dad’s favorite food. Do a trial and error so you don’t mess up on D-day and make it special with your own twist! You’ll surely get a thumbs-up for the delicious meal.
2. Book a “me time” for dad
Dads need some “me time” too – especially how “modern dads” are starting to be more involved in childcare and household chores, on top of their demanding jobs. Encourage dad to put self-care on top of their priorities every once in a while.
These days may be slower or more mundane than usual, but they get to take care of themselves through doing meditation or taking care of their skin and hair. Which brings us to Manny & Pie Calayan Clinic’s Special Treats for Dads from where you can choose from three services (or book all!) perfectly curated for dad’s “me time”! We’re 100% sure he’ll be game to set aside time for this – and it won’t hurt your pocket as we’ve got special prices this June!
3. Handmade gift
Nothing spells appreciation more than a handmade gift that encapsulates your time, effort and love (not dismissing other form of gifts– we’re simply softies for everything handmade and personalized)! Even if you aren’t artistic, why not recreate your favorite photo with that through drawing or painting? You can also jump in the kitchen and prepare some snacks he can bring to work.
If you plan to go the extra mile and have time to spare, you can create a resin art that he can display or sew a necktie he can wear with his favorite ensemble – he’ll proudly say it was made by you.
4. Share some laugh and tears over favorite memories
Go down memory lane and spend time reminiscing your favorite moments with dad. You’ll be able to remember important happenings in your childhood and uncover stories that only dad remembers (we’re sure dad’s a witness to some embarrassing things you did as a kid, a teenager and even an adult)!
This is helpful for those who have dads who may be struggling to remember or have hazy memory due to age. Show a photo, or an album for that matter, and see how much joy he will feel being able to recall memories.
5. Learn a skill from him
When things get awry on the road, it’s best dad got some helping hand. Do you notice your dad having some knack with making furniture, fixing cars or setting up and tinkering on home appliances? It’s simply because they’re innately skilled to be builders and fixers!
Ask him to teach you a skill that interests you and he’ll be glad to have the opportunity to teach this as skills that last a lifetime. Your dad will appreciate the fact you are eager to learn from him and how this works as quality time with you.
P.S. We recommend doing any of these activities anytime during the year – not only on Father’s Day. We ensure that you will be able to foster a good relationship with your dad even more.
Now that you’ve got some tips to show your love and appreciation for dad, pick up your phone and call, yes – CALL, dad and schedule some time with him. If he’s right beside you, just tap him and ask when he’s next day off. He’ll be delighted to hear that you’d like to spend time with him!
To dads out there, we wish you the most amazing Father’s Day!
To simply describe what a nose job is, it is the reshaping of the nose or improving its function. It is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the world for quite some time now. Despite being a top procedure, it can be intimidating for most people; especially when they are puzzled with questions.
In this blog, we break down the basics of getting your nose done, allowing you to familiarize yourself with information you need to know about the procedure. Take down notes or bookmark this blog if you are eyeing to enhance your nose. Ready? Let’s jump right in:
What are the reasons people undergo a nose job?
- Making a flat-looking nose taller
- Reduce the size of wide nasal tip
- Make overly large nostrils smaller
- Make small nostrils wider for better airflow
- Straighten bumpy or crooked nose
- Fix misshapen nose bridge
- Improve breathing
- Repair injured nose
Whichever the reason, whether for physiological or aesthetic purposes, a nose job can definitely change one’s life, moving forward.
Who are good candidates for this procedure?
Patients should be mature – both in body and mind. Their body, particularly their skeletal structure, should be fully formed. A person who is still in their growth phase is not a good candidate for a nose job.
Smokers who aim to undergo rhinoplasty are not good candidates for the procedure – unless they are keen on temporarily or permanently planning to quit the habit. Like other cosmetic procedures, a patient must have good overall health to ensure that healing is rapid and side effects are reduced.
On the other hand, the reason a patient should be mature in mind is that they need to have a full understanding of the procedure and its possible risks, and be mindful enough to strictly follow the procedure after-care.
Are there different types of nose job or rhinoplasty? Which one should I get?
Rhinoplasty is done in a myriad of ways, but it all begins with a consultation. Do you have a dream nose? Do you carry a nose “peg” photo which you wish your procedure will result in? Most people would shake their head and say those aren’t achievable.
We beg to differ! Carry ‘em with you so you and your surgeon are on the same page with how you want your nose to look like. From here, build a realistic expectation after undergoing a consultation with your doctor. Always remember that your overall face will be taken into consideration – that means your dream nose should blend well with your facial features!
Your consultation will familiarize you with the types of nose jobs – and which procedure/s you need. For some, a combination of both is necessary to perfect the nose suited to your facial features.
Augmentation Rhinoplasty
People with lower nose bridges benefit most from Augmentation Rhinoplasty. This procedure lifts the nasal bridge or nose tip to build its structure. Grafting and implants (such as fillers or cog threads) may be used to define the nose.
Reduction Rhinoplasty
By its name, Reduction Rhinoplasty involves making a large and bulbous nose smaller and wide nose slimmer. This does not involve grafting or implants as it takes away excess skin or cartilage.
All these information about rhinoplasty can be quite overwhelming but it helps that you are familiar with what you are about to undergo and make you feel secure. As our last note, make sure that you see a professional surgeon who isn’t only skilled but has a good reputation among patients and doctors – this is a green flag that you are in good hands (literally!) and that you are one step closer to your dream nose!
Now that you know the basics, are you ready to take the chance in achieving your dream nose?
If you said “yes”, then get in touch with us so we can arrange a consultation for you!
Whether she is in the clinic or traveling, Doc Pie is indeed hustling and bustling here and there. So you would ask, “How does she keep her skin radiant and young? Does she still have time for her skincare routine at home at the end of the day?”
The answer lies in what she does mid-day and while on the go. For sure, our busy friends out there can take a cue from Doc Pie’s on-the-go skincare routine.
If we are to describe her routine, it’s minimal and she only carries the essentials she needs and swears by! We took a little peek in her bag to know what products she carries around, and we’re here to share it with you so you know what to carry in your trusty on-the-go pouch!
Cleanser
Like the rest of us, Doc Pie likes keeping her skin clean – but she also knows going beyond the recommended times for washing the face can harm the skin. On days when it gets too humid, a quick and gentle cleanse using Cleansing Oil keeps Doc Pie’s skin clean, soft, and hydrated. This lightweight oil cleanser is perfect for any skin type, so we’re sure everyone can enjoy clean skin without worrying about drying it up.
Moisturizer
Another staple in Doc Pie’s on-the-go skincare routine is a moisturizer to keep her skin supple and hydrated anytime, anywhere. She carries her trusty Revitalizer which is packed with a special formula that can minimize the early signs of aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, and loss of skin laxity. Like Doc Pie, you can enjoy visibly younger-looking skin and bright skin anytime during the day.
Sunscreen
Whether Doc Pie is outdoors or in the clinic, she makes sure she uses Le Tinte SPF 50 before heading out and re-applying during the day. This sunscreen makes sure that she brings her A-game protection against various UV rays sources – and you can too!
For Doc Pie, self-care goes beyond home and is something you should carry wherever you can. After all, your skin doesn’t stop functioning as your body’s protective barrier. Keep this up and your skin will definitely thank you for it!
If there is anyone who is busier than a bee, that would probably be our mothers!
From taking care of their family, mothers may either work or have a business to run which does not give them enough time for themselves. Mom’s full plate of activities can cause her stress, and if constantly exposed to it, science mentions that premature and rapid aging may be one of the effects.
Because time is essential for busy moms, there are quick in-clinic anti-aging treatments that can effectively help moms destress when she is available and keep her skin all fresh and youthful.
Are you ready to give mom the me-time she deserves for a quick rejuvenation? Here are our recommended procedures that give the best results minus the long downtime.
Advanced Facials
Facial treatments are quick and usually have no downtime that can restore the youth of moms, almost instantly! Age-defying facial treatments not only cleanse the skin from impurities such as white heads and blackheads, these can also exfoliate the skin to reveal newer and glowing skin.
Make sure you look for facial treatments that utilize advancements in technology and use the best ingredients in their formulas to leverage the best results. For instance, Manny and Pie Calayan Clinic has a good selection of Advanced Facials perfect for the varying skin care needs of busy moms!
Dermal Fillers
When it comes to looking young, most moms do not want it to be too obvious. Some are simply not ready for the conversation of going under the knife. Busy moms need not fret thanks to advancements in cosmetic procedures; there is a subtle and almost-natural way to make it swim they drank from the fountain of youth.
Dermal Fillers, when administered by skillful experts, deliver seamless results. Most fillers use hyaluronic acid and are introduced to the skin to “fill in” or occupy a space or depression such as fine lines and wrinkles and urge the production of collagen. Dermal Fillers can also be used to restore balance and symmetry on the face.
With proper post-treatment care, the effects can last for a little over a year – a big plus for our busy bees!
Ultherapy Premier
What good does a fine lines and wrinkles treatment do if the skin droops and sags? Give mom the full deal with Ultherapy Premier! As moms are meticulous, this procedure is the only FDA-approved non-invasive procedure that can lift and tighten the skin. It uses micro-focused ultrasound technology to stimulate collagen production, which is an integral component in keeping the skin’s structure – which means tautness and firmness of the skin.
This is a perfect procedure for busy moms because they can experience the results immediately, with no pain or downtime!
No mom is too busy to not make time for herself! It only takes an hour or two for expert dermatologists to show-off their expertise that moms will surely raise a thumbs up. Better yet, book with Manny and Pie Calayan Clinic NOW to avail discounts on select services this month of May.
Don’t let this pass – just ping us!
Mothers are superheroes and that’s the truth. She may not be clad with a fancy red cape nor can she fly to outer space or have super speed – but she surely has the superpower that no villain can counter. Moms are selfless and love beyond what we can imagine. That’s her superpower that is not easily replicated by just anyone.
Being a super wo-mom is not easy; it’s a lifelong commitment that starts even before an addition to the family is on its way. A super wo-mom takes on the usual roles moms do – taking care of their children, keeping homes organized All these on top of managing their personal interests such as working, running a business (or more!), studying to reskill and upskill, and extending motherly love outside bloodlines through charities.
Super wo-moms make all these seamless and appear easy to-do. So, what exactly makes a super wo-mom? We list down the characteristics we love about our mothers:
1. Hyper-organized to save, save, save
We’re sure you’ve asked mom countless times where things are and sure enough, she KNOWS where they are. Each one of us might have gotten a fair share of lectures to keep our things organized. Other than leaving our homes tidy – it’s actually a means to save time , energy, and money.
2. Has big room for learning
Women, once they’ve become a mom, enter a seemingly new world. Aside from learning the tropes of motherhood, they must also learn how to navigate through “Mom’s Guilt” that can manifest as feeling guilty of being away from their children to work or not being able to give what toddlers or teens want.
A super wo-mom knows that she is not perfect and struggles, misjudgment and asking for help is part of the learning curve.
3. Imparting knowledge
Moms, no matter which way you look at it, seem to always be right. We believe they are super geniuses – from being our tutor for our math and science homeworks, best friend to hear our daily dilemmas, a confidante to broken hearts and a life coach to help us journey through life.
They simply know us down to our cores and she can share knowledge curated just for us.
If your son or daughter sent this to you – you best believe that you are a Super Wo-Mom in their eyes. You definitely defeat Superman on this one – we’re all for real life heroes!
Is “Maskne” still a thing this 2022?
Posted on January 28, 2022 by Manny & Pie Calayan Clinic
It has been three years since we started wearing masks as part of our wardrobe to ward off the COVID-19 virus that pushed the world into a global pandemic. While measures have been made to shorten the pandemic such as lockdowns and implementation of vaccines, it remains uncertain when the pandemic will end. This means we have to keep our masks on to protect ourselves and our loved ones.
This signifies that most will still have to struggle with maskne, right? That is pretty much the case.
Maskne (mask acne) is an umbrella term covering the various skin conditions that can arise from the frequent wearing of masks. This includes but is not limited to acne, rosacea, contact dermatitis, folliculitis, and eczema.
Wearing a mask for a prolonged period of time creates a humid and warm environment causing increased sebum and sweat production, and yeast and acne-causing bacteria to thrive. Friction between the mask and the skin also causes irritation, inflammation, and breakouts.
Some individuals may also be allergic to the materials the mask is made of or the chemicals such as detergent used to clean it.
What are ways to prevent maskne?
Wear no makeup or light makeup. Skin experts say light makeup should be fine under the mask. However, heavier layers of makeup can further clog pores and stop the skin from breathing.
Clean and moisturize your skin. Make sure that your skin is clean before putting a mask and after wearing it. Use a mild cleanser as this will not dry the skin. Additionally, we recommend moisturizing the skin to prevent the overproduction of sebum. Select products that are fit for your skin type and labeled non-comedogenic as these do not clog your pores.
Toss disposable masks or washcloth masks after use. We do not recommend reusing your masks as dirt has already been sitting on it. If you are using disposable masks, make sure to properly throw it. For cloth masks, wash it after every use and cleanse it with unscented and gentle detergent.
While we are seeing that the pandemic will stay longer, it does not mean maskne should too.
Manny and Pie Calayan Clinic have a variety of products and services that can help alleviate maskne problems. For a complete routine and holistic approach fit just for you, schedule a consultation with us today.
All You Need is Love
Posted on February 5, 2022 by Manny & Pie Calayan Clinic
Ah, the month of love has dawned upon us again. This month somehow pushes us to yearn for love, whether we receive it or express it. Although one of the most complicated emotions, we agree that we all need love, even the Hierarchy of Needs says so!
Bring love and affection to the table with these five ways, anchored from the five love languages: words of affirmation, acts of service, physical touch, gift giving, and quality time.
Compliment your loved ones
Communication is key to a stable and fruitful relationship, more so when you squeeze in meaningful compliments. They simply feel seen, loved and secure. So next time you see them rock a new hairdo or finally decide to learn a new recipe, acknowledge their efforts and show your appreciation. Words can be overwhelming, so a simple “I love having you around” works too!
Do something your partner would like
Pay attention to the little quirks your partner has and do it yourself next time! Do they prefer less or more sugar on their coffee? How about booking that vacation they long dreamt about? You can also take over cooking dinner if your partner is overwhelmed with work. Doing things for your partner, even when they didn’t ask for it, shows how much you pay attention to them. Take notes if needed!
Initiate intimacy
Some people have physical touch as their love language. Nonverbal ways of showing love are known to produce oxytocin, often called the “love hormone” – which is why hugging or kissing your significant other is fulfilling. You can also offer a massage after a long day, hold their hands in public, or schedule a night for dancing to satisfy sensual needs.
Send them care packages
The changing times may have separated you from your partner and spending quality time is hard, but that does not mean you cannot express your love anymore. Send a thoughtful care package, such as skin care products, to show you are thinking of them. Indulge their skin health and throw in a note hoping that they are taking care of themselves. With a myriad of products for various concerns, we are sure you will be able to find the perfect gifts here (P.S. these are on sale until February 15, 2022!).
Plan a “we time”
Being physically and mentally present when you are with your better half is considered “we time,” whether going for a stroll after lunch, doing workouts or watching your favorite TV show together. You can step it up a notch by trying out a new restaurant or going for pampering treatments. We’ve got you covered because we have treatments for couples, perfect for a pre-Valentine’s date!
Whichever love language your partner loves to receive or you like to receive, make sure to express it every day. It does not have to be grand as “I love you” can come in many different forms. We are hoping you pick up a couple of ways to practice into your love life and may these make your relationship more fulfilling and happier.

Summer vacations eventually end – and that’s a sad truth we have trouble facing. We’ll be going back to the reality of logging in at work and braving the metro traffic, and saying goodbye to the beautiful places we went to and all the fun activities we did. This also means, any damage to our skin during our vacation will surely manifest.
Your skin will need serious TLC, especially if you have been outside most times and exposed to the sun, been swimming in seawater or pools. Chances are, you will be nursing sun-damaged skin, clogged pores and even dry skin when you get home.
To return your skin’s tip-top shape, here is our recommended post summer skin care routine.
Exfoliate to unclog pores
Sweat and oil production are heightened when the weather is warm. This is further exacerbated by the skin’s natural shedding of dead skin cells – so clogged pores are likely during summer.
If your skin is not inflamed or you are not experiencing sunburn, exfoliate your skin to eliminate oil, dirt and dead skin cells. Exfoliate regularly, at most twice a week, to remove gunk that is not easily removed with cleansers. If you have the splendor of time and extra cash, book a facial treatment to professionally remove blemishes on the skin.
Step up your skin’s hydration
The season’s dry climate can dry up your skin – plus, sun exposure, chlorinated pools and saltwater beaches can strip the skin’s moisture. We think that’s enough reason for you to pile on hydrating products to boost your skin’s moisture level after your summer vacation.
The bottom line is “Moisture lost should be replaced”. Apply light moisturizer on slightly damp skin to allow moisture to be sealed in and absorbed by the skin.Make sure to hydrate the rest of your body too by drinking enough water.
Even up your complexion
Uneven skin tone, dull skin and dark spots due to frequent and prolonged sun exposure are few things we notice after vacations. To counter these effects of sun damage on the skin, use illuminating skin care products that can improve your skin tone. Don’t forget to partner this with applying sunscreen and re-applying again in the afternoon to prevent sunburn.
If you are looking for a more personalized approach in caring for your skin after the changes it went through during your summer vacation, do pay us a visit for a consultation with our trusted skin experts! Just ping us to book a schedule.
Lifestyle Changes that Actually Last Part 2
Posted on January 21, 2022 by Manny & Pie Calayan Clinic
One good mindset to start off the new year is to manifest that your resolutions will be your evolution. When you incorporate lifestyle changes that make your life better, you will be welcoming abundance in many different ways.
We have listed six lifestyle changes on our Part 1(hyperlink) and now, we have more doable activities for you to try out:
Take a stroll before you start your day and during breaks
Whether you are working from home or in the office, take a walk every now and then to introduce physical activity in your routine. Not only does this help maintain weight, talking a walk improves your day as it is found to boost your mood, energy, and mental clarity.
Protect your me-time
Sometimes there is so much on our plate than we can handle. It is okay to hustle and keep your network intact, but it is also important to take a break every now and then to avoid burnout. Give yourself a downtime, such as doing a social media detox over the weekend, scheduling that vacation you deserve, or visiting a local museum. Go ahead and schedule that leave!
Stop comparing yourself to others
In the age of social media where most people have gone public, it is not hard to see content that makes you go “Why not me?”. Drop this mindset and understand that each individual has their own experiences and pace in reaching success. Practice gratitude and contentment, focus on your strengths, and celebrate your victories no matter how big or small.
Try something new
Do you sometimes feel like you are stuck in a loophole of boring routines? Challenge yourself by trying something you haven’t before, such as learning to cook a new dish, painting using gouache, or learning a new language. This helps stimulate your intellectual abilities and opens your eyes to new possibilities.
Wear sunscreen every time
We live in a tropical country and we get more exposure to the sun. Wear a full-spectrum sunscreen(hyperlink to product) whether you are indoors or outdoors to protect your skin from UVA and UVB rays. This helps prevent premature skin aging, maintain skin tone and ward off the risk of skin cancer.
Live within your means
Each time you receive your earnings does not signify automatic spending. First, allot a budget for your necessary bills (water, electricity, etc.) and save up for insurance and retirement to secure your future. Cut out spending on unnecessary things such as subscriptions to sites you rarely visit, memberships you do not use anymore, and the likes. Note that you can spend on yourself but make sure not to overspend or go beyond what you normally earn.
With this list of lifestyle changes, a key takeaway is these activities are for your self-improvement. Once you have emulated these in your life, you can inspire others to do the same and collectively make a community that is self-aware and conscious enough to take action to what is happening in society.
This wraps up our Lifestyle Changes that Actually Last blog series. Pick up one or all these lifestyle changes and you can experience a life with no regrets.
Be Christmas-Ready [PART 2]: Beauty Tips from Our Very Own Dermatologist, Dr. Pie
Posted on December 14, 2021 by Manny & Pie Calayan Clinic
Previously, we shared with you some beauty tips and derma treatments to help your skin be Christmas-ready, straight from Dr. Pie! LINK Now, let’s continue our journey in achieving the #NoFilter and #NoMakeupLook this Christmas – and in every other season throughout the year, every year!
AESTHETIC MEDICINE TREATMENTS RECOMMENDED BY DR. PIE
These procedures are all minimally invasive and they aim to reduce the early signs of aging, such as fine lines and wrinkles, and to improve the overall symmetry of the facial features. None of these procedures involve surgery, so there are no cuts, no incisions, and no sutures! Here, we are going to talk about Dr. Pie’s favorites to do for herself and to recommend patients.
THREAD LIFT
Dr. Pie: This is my favorite Aesthetic Medicine procedure because I see instant natural-looking results right after the procedure. It is done very quickly and is applicable to the face and neck. Thread Lifts help stimulate collagen production, resulting in a more youthful-looking skin. In addition, the threads pull the face taut, eliminating wrinkles and giving an overall smoother appearance. You can really see the sharp reduction in wrinkles and lines on the areas of the face and neck where the threads are placed.
Bonus: Remember SRS Machine from the previous blog? According to Dr. Pie, SRS Machine combined with Thread Lift is magic. You should give it a try!
MICRO BOTOX
Dr. Pie: This is my go-to for a very natural relaxed facial expression. The procedure is painless with no downtime. It helps prevent deep lines in the future.
DERMAL FILLERS
Dr. Pie: This is another favorite of mine. When placed on strategic parts of the face, Dermal Fillers can give a very youthful appearance. Those who are concerned with thin lips can get fuller and poutier-looking lips with just the right amount of dermal fillers, and other areas of the face too!
PROCEDURE INFORMATION | ||
PROCEDURE | DEFINITION | APPLICABLE AREAS |
Thread Lift | Thread Lift is a minimally invasive face-lifting procedure that involves the insertion of sterile Cog Threads just below the skin and along the hairline to minimize its visibility. The threads stimulate the formulation of collagen. The new collagen forms along or clings onto the threads, that’s why the face or the neck achieves the natural, lifted look. | – face – neck |
Micro Botox | Micro Botox is similar to conventional Botox in the sense that a neurotoxin is injected to freeze nerve signals. However, instead of injecting into the muscles like in conventional Botox, small doses of neurotoxin are injected superficially (into the different layers of the skin). Because of this technique, the amount of neurotoxin injected into the treatment area is more controlled, resulting in a more subtle, and natural result that does not limit facial movement or expressions. More than reducing the appearance of fine lines, Micro Botox can also be used as a treatment to reduce excess oil and sweat production, to make the pores appear smaller, and to improve redness. The depth of the injection will depend on the result you are aiming for, but it will not touch the muscles. | – forehead – crow’s feet – glabellar – chin – laugh lines – nasalis lines – jaw |
Dermal Fillers | Dermal Fillers involve the injecting of a water-based solution in certain areas of the face to regain its plumpness or improve its volume. This procedure can improve the overall appearance and balance of the facial features. | – nose – cheeks – lips – chin – jaw |
Take note that these procedures reveal immediate results and have very minimal downtime; so if any of these interests you, you still have a week before Christmas to get it done! Before anything else, make sure to book your consultation with Dr. Pie to know which procedure suits your goal best.
Benefits of Skin Care and a Special PROMO
Posted on November 6, 2021 by Manny & Pie Calayan Clinic
Skin care sounds tedious when you think about the multiple products available in the market, leading to skipping it altogether. But think of it this way: taking care of the skin. Doesn’t sound so bad, right? It is important to take care of your skin as it is the body’s largest organ and the first defense against harmful, environmental factors. With that said, skin care is for everybody!
BENEFITS OF SKIN CARE
Protection. Being the first defense against harmful, environmental factors, it is important to keep the skin in good condition so that you will be protected at all times. It also keeps you from possible sun-related skin problems (skin cancer being the worst).
Prevention of skin issues. Maintaining the skin at optimum condition reduces the risk of acne, discoloration, and other skin irregularities. It also delays the early onset of fine lines and wrinkles! In the long run, it’s more cost-effective because treating skin issues can be expensive.
Regeneration. Following a skin care routine allows the shedding of dead skin cells to make room for new, healthy skin cells to grow. It keeps you looking young, fresh, and radiant!
Increased comfort. Regular skin care will hinder you from experiencing redness, itching, swollenness, and scaling – all of which are irritations caused by unhealthy skin that can negatively affect your day-to-day activities.
Confidence boost. Great skin is something to be proud of! It’s a result of dedication and hard work (to some). When you look better, you ultimately feel better – and that’s the goal!
SKIN CARE PRODUCTS TO KEEP IN STOCK
Good skin care products will do their job and give you your money’s worth. The key here is looking for a product that is suited best for your skin type (normal, oily, combination, dry). Here are the basic skin care products that you should always have with you:
Cleanser. It’s vital to wash your face at least twice a day – morning and night. The goal is to remove all impurities, such as oil and dirt, that can clog your pores. As a rule, you also need to immediately wash your face right after a workout or any other exhausting activity to avoid sweat from irritating your skin.
Toner. Use a toner right after washing your face to refresh and calm the skin. It’s meant to bring your skin back to its natural pH level and to prepare it so that your skin can absorb the nutrients of the next products you will apply (such as serums and moisturizers).
Serum. There are a lot of products that contain different antioxidants addressing specific issues. It’s great to add an anti-aging serum to your routine to keep your skin smooth, firm, and lifted.
Moisturizer. Apply moisturizer while your face is slightly damp from your serum to lock in the moisture. Moisturizers are important to keep your skin hydrated and smooth, avoiding dryness and the early onset of fine lines. It’s a common misconception that oily or combination skin types don’t require moisturizer. You still do! A gel-based moisturizer works best for oily or combination skin.
Sunscreen. It is imperative that you keep your skin protected from harsh UVA and UVB rays. Excessive exposure to sun causes a lot of damage to the skin such as hyperpigmentation, photoaging (premature skin aging), and skin cancer. Get a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 30 for the full coverage. Make sure to apply it whether you’re outdoors or indoors all day and to reapply as needed!

Why Intimate Care is Important and How to Do It Right
Posted on October 16, 2021 by Manny & Pie Calayan Clinic
When you hear of “intimate care,” what comes to mind? Probably the words vagina and washing. Both words are indeed related to intimate care, but there’s so much more to it than that. To completely understand the topic, we should first be acquainted with the basics of the female reproductive organ – its external and internal parts. Let’s keep it simple and easily understandable through this table:
VULVA |
VAGINA |
External – everything you see down there is actually called the vulva, not the vagina (you do see the opening to the vagina, though) |
Internal – it starts from the opening and ends at the cervix |
Skin surrounding the vagina |
Contains natural, good bacteria to protect it against bad bacteria |
Not self-cleaning |
Self-cleaning |
Does not affect the vagina’s pH level |
Controls its own pH balance (acidity) |
Based on the information above, we have concluded that the vagina does not need any kind of cleansing. Putting any kind of “feminine hygiene” product inside the vagina (such as douching or steaming) will only disrupt its natural microbiome. However, what you do need to do is practice vulvar care.
Vulvar Care is the practice of keeping the vulva in a good condition. Take it as an introduction to vaginal care since the opening of the vagina is surrounded by the vulva.
The Importance of Intimate Care
Knowing how to take care of your lady parts properly will avoid:
1. Infection
It arises when good bacteria are outnumbered by the bad ones. It is a result of unsafe sex and improper hygiene. You must be wary of the products you use on your vulva as it is a delicate skin. Take note: there is not any product used to clean the inside of the vagina.
2. Irritation
The vulva is under constant friction due to clothing, that is why it’s best to use breathable fabrics like cotton for your underwear as it keeps the vulva cool and dry. A dry vulva is no place for bad bacteria to grow. Ingrown hair and redness may be experienced after grooming of your pubic hair. Whether you opt to wax or shave, proper care and protocols must be followed to avoid irritation.
3. Dryness
Because of menopause or hormonal changes due to treatment and medication, the vulva and the vagina loses moisture and elasticity. As a result, intercourse may be painful to some. Use moisturizers specifically formulated for vulva care to improve skin and tissue quality. This is totally different from vaginal lubricants used to make intercourse more comfortable.
How to Do It Right
Here are the basics of proper intimate care:
1. Eat food rich in antioxidants, probiotics, protein, Vitamins E & C, and fatty acids.
2. Exercise to tighten the pelvic floor muscles.
3. Wash with warm water with unscented soap. Steer clear of scented washes.
4. Keep it cool and dry. Wipe with clean tissue from FRONT TO BACK.
5. Remove damp clothing after swimming or after a workout session.
6. Practice proper hygiene during menstruation. Don’t leave a napkin on or a tampon in for more than 4 hours.
7. Practice safe sex. Use a condom and pee after sex to avoid the risk of infection.
8. When grooming, wear loose clothing to avoid further chafing and moisturize the vulva 24 hours post-grooming to soothe irritated skin.
Ultimately, the goal of proper intimate care is to improve the quality of life and of sexual gratification by avoiding feelings of discomfort in your nether regions.
Stress and How It Affects the Skin
Posted on September 11, 2021 by Manny & Pie Calayan Clinic
We always say that beauty comes from within, that it’s skin-deep. Skin, being the largest organ in the body, reacts to a lot of different factors to keep us in homeostasis, the state of being steady or balanced internally to function in optimum condition. When something is happening within our bodies, that tips the scale to the other side. That imbalance is presented in the skin. One of the factors that affect the skin’s condition is stress.
Stress is exhibited when we are under physical, emotional, or mental pressure. Beyond the daily challenges of life, we are put under a lot of stress more than ever because of the anxieties brought about by COVID-19. Our bodies react to stress through the release of a stress hormone called cortisol.
Cortisol is the primary stress hormone that is activated when the body is experiencing internal and external stressors. It has functions beyond fight-or-flight response since cortisol receptors are present throughout the body such as the Nervous, Immune, Reproductive, Respiratory, and Cardiovascular Systems, among others. Thus, cortisol is not only responsible to stress response, but it also helps to control blood pressure, maintain blood sugar levels, reduce inflammation, and support the immune system.
EFFECTS OF STRESS ON THE SKIN
Stressful situations disrupt normal cortisol levels. Heightened cortisol level for prolonged periods may affect the skin through:
– Increased sebum production
– Increased sensitivity and reactivity
– Increased inflammation
– Impaired wound-healing properties
– Impaired immune response
As a result of these, the skin is more prone to acne and skin rashes or hives. Those who have existing skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea are more susceptible to flare-ups.
HOW TO COPE UP WITH OR REDUCE THE FEELINGS OF STRESS
Here are some tips to improve the skin’s condition due to stress:
1. Acknowledge your emotions
2. Be aware of bad habits that may exacerbate the skin’s reaction to stress (e.g., bad lifestyle, insufficient water intake, frequent scratching/pricking of inflamed skin)
3. Don’t isolate yourself from family and friends
4. Relax and meditate
5. Actively practice self-care activities
6. Seek the help of professionals if needed
7. Up your skin care game

What Causes Dark Inner Thighs and How to Treat Them
Posted on August 21, 2021 by Manny & Pie Calayan Clinic
When a certain area of your body is darker than your skin tone, that is generally because of hyperpigmentation. Hyperpigmentation is the overproduction of melanin, the natural pigment responsible for the color of the eyes, hair, and skin. A darker patch of skin commonly does not pose any harm, but may cause a negative impact on one’s self-esteem, especially on areas such as the underarms and inner thighs.
CAUSES OF DARK INNER THIGHS
1. Chafing
It is the most common cause of dark inner thighs which occurs when your thighs rub together while walking or exercising. The friction experienced will cause itching and irritation, followed by the darkening of the skin. This also includes friction caused by tight clothing.
2. Hormonal Imbalance
Pregnancy and other conditions like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and Acanthosis nigricans may affect melanin production, resulting to hyperpigmentation.
3. Direct and excessive sun exposure
Sunlight triggers melanin production. Thus, overexposure to sunlight causes overproduction of melanin, resulting to hyperpigmentation. Other than having darker patches of skin, excessive sun exposure causes premature skin aging and other skin problems. Avoid sun exposure and use sunscreen with at least SPF 30!
4. Dry skin
When the skin’s barrier is compromised, it loses its ability to hold onto moisture and sebum, then it becomes dry. Dry skin becomes itchy which leads to scratching. The repeat cycle of itch-scratch, itch-scratch results to damaged and darker skin.
TREATMENTS FOR DARK INNER THIGHS
1. Miracle Light Laser
It is a progressive skin brightening and rejuvenating treatment for pigmentations and dark spots that is not only applicable to dark inner thighs, but also to other areas of the body and the face. Miracle Light Laser is done in two different settings: 1) for brightening; and 2) for rejuvenation. It is recommended to have at least a minimum of 6 sessions to see desired results, done every 2 weeks.
2. PicoTone Laser
It is a picosecond laser treatment that lightens and rejuvenates areas of the skin with no downtime. Like Miracle Light Laser, it is recommended to have at least a minimum of 6 sessions to see desired results, done every 2 weeks. But unlike Miracle Light Laser, PicoTone Laser is performed in just one setting that penetrates deeper and can target cells that cause hyperpigmentation more accurately, although both are very effective. Treatment depends on doctor’s advice after consultation.
3. Tranex
It involves the use of a combination peel to treat not only hyperpigmentation, but also melasma. It is recommended to have at least a minimum of 6 sessions to see desired results, done every 2 weeks. Tranex is best alternated with Miracle Light Laser or PicoTone Laser for optimum results, unless treatment plan is changed by the doctor after consultation. With Tranex, peeling of the skin will be experienced. It is strictly prohibited to rub or scrub the area, as well as to forcefully peel the skin off.
4. Detox Drip
To achieve overall glowing and healthy skin, add Detox Drip to tie your treatment plan together. Detox Drip is a glutathione infusion with essential antioxidants that effectively detoxifies the skin, boosts the immune system, and prevents cell damage caused by free radicals. It is recommended to have it done for a series of sessions every 3 to 7 days for optimum results.
To prevent having dark inner thighs, make sure to avoid chafing by wearing breathable clothing and by moisturizing the area daily. But if you do have this problem, you don’t have to live with it forever! Book your consultation to know the best course of treatment for you.
Raise the Roof with These Underarm Whitening Treatments
Posted on August 7, 2021 by Manny & Pie Calayan Clinic
Having dark underarms is a social stigma, especially in the Philippines. It shouldn’t be a cause for worry or embarrassment, but if it does bother you, here are some dermatological treatments to lighten dark underarms.
Miracle Light Laser
WHAT: Miracle Light Laser is a quick, “lunchtime” rejuvenation treatment that delivers instant glowing skin with no downtime.
FOR: This works best as your maintenance for an already bright skin.
HOW: Your underarms will be cleansed prior to the passing of laser light on the area. You will feel light pulses aimed at the underarms on a slow stroke for whitening purposes, followed by fast strokes for rejuvenation purposes.
FREQUENCY: It is recommended to do this procedure once every 2 weeks for a series of sessions to achieve your desired results.
CONTRAINDICATION: For safety reasons, this procedure is not allowed for pregnant and lactating women. Accutane intake must also be discontinued at least 6 months prior to the treatment.
Picotone Laser
WHAT: PicoTone Laser delivers picosecond pulses of light that hits deeper into the skin to progressively lighten and rejuvenate the skin with no downtime.
FOR: It works best for pigmented skin and initial results are usually seen a few days after the treatment.
HOW: Your underarms will be cleansed prior to the passing of laser light on the area. Multiple shots will be aimed directly to your underarms. You may feel a minimal stinging discomfort but is otherwise tolerable. Post-laser creams (hydrocortisone and mupirocin) will be applied to reduce redness and to avoid bacterial infection.
Tranex
WHAT: Tranex is the application of a whitening solution (a combination of Azelaic Acid, Resorcinol, and Phytic Acid) to treat dark spots and pigmentation.
FOR: It works best for pigmented skin. Achieve maximum results when paired with Miracle Light Laser.
HOW: Your underarms will be cleansed prior to the application of the Tranex solution, which will be left on the area for 10 to 15 minutes. During this process, a fan for ventilation will be directed to the area when an itching or tingling sensation occurs. Once the solution is removed, a neutralizing solution will be dampened on the underarms to avoid further irritation.
FREQUENCY: It is recommended to do this procedure once every 2 weeks for a series of sessions to achieve your desired results.
CONTRAINDICATION: For safety reasons, this procedure is not allowed for pregnant and lactating women. It is also not allowed for those with skin irritation or peeling. Be reminded that you cannot wash the treatment area 24 hours post-treatment.
3-Day Peeling
WHAT: For some cases, though very rarely, Dr. Pie recommends undergoing a 3-Day Peeling procedure. It’s an exfoliation treatment to remove dead skin cells and even out the skin tone, enhancing the overall quality of the skin.
FOR: This treatment is for anyone who wants total exfoliation; however, consultation with our doctor is required before undergoing the treatment.
HOW: The peeling solution is applied on the underarms three times, with a 10-minute gap in between to allow the solution to dry. During this process, a fan for ventilation will be directed to the underarm area to keep it dry. This will be done for three consecutive days.
FREQUENCY: It is recommended to have at least 1 or 2 sessions to achieve your desired results. The next session should be done a month after your first session, but consultation with our doctor is required prior to this.
CONTRAINDICATION: For safety reasons, this procedure is not allowed for pregnant and lactating women. It is also not allowed for those with skin irritation or peeling. Be reminded that you cannot wash the treatment area 24 hours post-treatment. Avoid sun exposure to prevent skin irritation.
Whatever you decide on trying, it is best to undergo a consultation with our doctor to know the best course of action for your skin care needs, especially that the skin on the underarms is very sensitive to irritation. Self-Care Tips to Reinvent Yourself Holistically
Posted on April 1, 2020 by Shaine Chua
To keep up with our Self-Love 2020 theme, we also need to practice self-care. In a nutshell, self- care is having a balanced lifestyle and being mindful of your holistic well-being. We’re talking about developing one’s physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and – let’s face it – financial health.
Everyone would think that self-care is a basic concept that anyone can simply do; however, simple as it may be, self-care is an activity that is difficult to maintain. Self-care is a conscious decision to deliberately do activities that are good for you and gear towards holistic well-being. It means that you actually have to plan activities in every facet of your life and make sure that you love doing those activities, or at the very least you have fun doing, to make it work. If something feels forced, you will fail, like anything else in life. Being tired or busy is not an excuse for someone who masters the art of self-care.
Below are recommended self-care activities to reinvent yourself holistically:
Physical Health
- Eat right. Enjoy a well-balanced meal every day and avoid an excessive amount of junk food.
- Sleep right. Get enough hours of quality sleep specific to your age group to properly rest your mind and body.
- Exercise. Choose a workout routine that will help you stay fit while keeping you energized and happy.
- Go for a checkup. A routine medical checkup helps you maintain your health and possibly detect and prevent illness.
Mental Health
- Answer difficult puzzles. It is important to challenge yourself and to fuel your mind with brainteasers so you can prevent it from being dull.
- Do pleasurable activities. Reading a book or watching a movie helps you relax still while keeping your mind at work.
- Do relaxing activities. Taking a walk or soaking in a hot bath clears your mind and reduces anxiety.
Emotional Health
- Learn how to say NO. It helps you be true to yourself and to others, avoiding having to feel regret and being taken advantage of.
- Get rid of toxicity. Go away from toxic places and people. Sever toxic relationships that cause you discomfort and anxiety.
- Spend time with friends and loved ones. Talking to people who matter most to you brings feelings of joy and contentment.
- Express emotions and manage them. It is perfectly normal to release emotions of joy, sadness, fear, or anger but it is important that you know how to cope with it.
Spiritual Health
- Pray or meditate. Keep yourself in check and your feet on the ground. It helps you reduce stress and anxiety, ultimately leading to a good emotional and mental state.
- Be appreciative. The more you feel thankful, the more that you nurture your soul.
- Listen to inspirational talks. It gives you a better perspective on the world and a better understanding of your relationship with everything around you.
Financial Health
- Do what you love. Confucius didn’t say “choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life” for nothing. If work causes too much stress, you should do the necessary changes to improve the situation.
- Save up for self-care activities. You can support your self-care activities guilt-free if you have allotted an allowance for it.
It’s a hard task to take on, but you’ll see that the rewards will be fulfilling. Neglecting one aspect of your well-being means the collapse of the entire plan; hence, you should keep on tweaking your self-care plan until it suits you best. If you don’t have the time? Make time for it! Remember that self-care is a conscious decision to help yourself live your life the best way possible.
Here’s Everything You Should Know About Man-Boobs
Posted on June 11, 2020 by Shaine Chua
Societal standards state that men must have muscular bodies which includes having toned pecs (chest area). Imagine how men may feel when they have man-boobs, i.e. enlarged breasts?
Gynecomastia
The scientific explanation of man-boobs is having the condition called gynecomastia. Reportedly, 30% of men will experience this once in their lifetime. As common as it is, those who are suffering from it gets highly concerned because of the fear of having breast cancer.
To get away with scientific terms that are difficult to understand, gynecomastia is the enlargement of breast tissues caused by hormonal imbalance between estrogens (“female” hormones) and androgens (“male” hormones). It’s non-cancerous; however, it is painful, and some may experience nipple discharge. Men with this problem may feel a lump around their breast.
Pseudogynecomastia
It shouldn’t be confused with gynecomastia, although it looks the same. Pseudogynecomastia is the enlargement of breasts due to fat deposits. It’s common for obese men. In this case, diet and exercise is the best solution for man-boobs to go away. Seek the help of a nutritionist and fitness trainer to solve your man-boobs problem.
Causes
- Hormonal imbalance prevalent in puberty. The man-boobs problem should be gone by the age of 18. If not, it’s highly likely that it’s in your genes – meaning there’s at least one in your family tree who experienced gynecomastia.
- Medications taken. A number of medicines may have gynecomastia side effects, especially if it contains anti-androgens – hormones that regulate and develop male characteristics.
- Existing health conditions. Treatments for cancer (chemotherapy), thyroid condition (radiation), liver disease can cause gynecomastia as a side effect.
- Skin/Haircare products. Any skincare product (e.g. shampoo, soap, lotions) containing tea tree oil or lavender oil reportedly cause what is called prepubertal gynecomastia as these oils blocks the effects of androgens. However, research is still needed in this area.
- Substance and drug abuse. Smoking of marijuana, heroin, and other amphetamines can stimulate estrogen, causing an imbalance in the estrogen/androgen ratio.
- Old age. The decline in testosterone production for men by the age of 50 can cause gynecomastia.
Prevention
- Avoid the use of skin/haircare products with tea tree oil or lavender oil.
- Do not smoke marijuana, heroin, and other amphetamines.
- Check the medicines that you take. Ask your doctor about its side effects.
- Diet and exercise.
Treatment
- Oral medication may be prescribed by your doctor to block the effects of estrogen in the body.
- Surgery can be considered if a man is experiencing severe pain and anxiety. You must consult with a trusted doctor to know your options.
If man-boobs negatively affects your self-confidence, be comforted in the fact that there are ways for you to treat it. What’s important is that you know your options.
SWEAT LESS, ENJOY MORE! – What You Need to Know About Hyperhidrosis
Posted on March 14, 2020 by Shaine Chua
According to WebMD, hyperhidrosis is a disorder that leads to excessive sweating. Common affected areas are the palms, soles of the feet, and underarms while some experience it on the groin area, and the most unfortunate ones on their entire body. When you have hyperhidrosis, weather conditions and emotional states of nervousness may or may not play a role in over-sweating. You can be the healthiest person in the world and still have this condition.
There are two causes of hyperhidrosis which are:
- Primary Focal Hyperhidrosis.
One factor seen in having this condition is hereditary. You don’t have to be physically active to sweat because the nerves on your sweat glands get triggered and become overactive, causing excessive sweating. It gets even more terrible with stress.
- Secondary Hyperhidrosis
This is less common and is caused by an existing medical condition such as diabetes, menopause, thyroid issues, and nervous system disorders, among others. It can also be a side effect of certain medications.
Excessive sweating is such a hassle and a cause of embarrassment for people who are suffering from it. In a study, those who have hyperhidrosis may experience some of the following burdens:
- Severe embarrassment on and missed business or social gatherings due to wet clothing and palms
- Hassle of changing clothes more than twice a day
- Avoidance of doing handshakes
- Affected work performance
- Soaked skin leads to fungal or bacterial infections
- Difficulty with social and intimate relationships
- Depression and lack of confidence (worst)
Secondary hyperhidrosis may be gone once the existing medical condition causing it is treated. Treatment for primary focal hyperhidrosis may be the following:
- Specialized antiperspirants that contain aluminum chloride for mild hyperhidrosis
- Iontophoresis that involves the delivering of low-level of currents to your palms, soles, or underarms while submerged in water to block sweat glands momentarily
- Over-the-Counter Anticholinergic drugs that prevents the production of the chemical acetylcholine from stimulating sweat glands, but do take note that it takes 2 whole weeks before it takes effect and there are side effects like constipation and dizziness
- Botox that is an FDA-approved procedure to block sweat glands for severe hyperhidrosis
- Surgery for the armpits by removing the sweat glands located there or by severing the nerves that signal the sweat glands
Enjoy your summer even more with less sweating! You can visit any Manny & Pie Calayan Clinic branch near you to assess your concern. Remember that it is best to consult a trusted professional to take the best course of action necessary to treat any disorder.
Summer Break or Summer BreakOUTs? Tips to Combat Acne During the Summer

School lets out. Vacation leaves were filed. You’ve planned a whole road trip that ends at the beach. You’ve packed your bags. Your friends are waiting. The day has come – your summer break! You got up from bed, walked to the bathroom, saw your face in the mirror, were shocked with horror – PIMPLES! All over your face!
This is just an example of a scene that one can experience during summertime. It doesn’t matter if you’re already over the puberty stage. Adults can get acne breakouts, too, especially when said adult has an oily or combination skin type. Let’s face it, pimples ruin the fun (and what could’ve been a picture-perfect Instagram post). It’s a problem that affects one’s confidence; so, we are here to tackle the why’s, where’s, and how’s of summer acne breakouts.
WHY do we experience acne breakouts especially during the summer?
Three things happen during the summertime that ultimately cause acne breakouts which are:
- sebum or oil production kicks its gear into overdrive;
- pores open; and
- excessive sweating.
Since pores are open due to the sweltering summer heat, oil, sweat, and other dirt clog the pores, resulting to acnes. You’d be surprised that it doesn’t happen on the face alone! Other areas of the body can be affected, too.
WHERE can acnes develop especially during the summer?
Some of the common areas of the body that develop acne are those covered in clothing and tend to sweat a lot. Even the hairline can experience some pimples here and there because hair follicles get clogged with sweat and oil, too.
Without further ado, here are some of the common areas where acne can develop especially during the summer:
- face and hairline;
- shoulders;
- chest area;
- bikini area;
- butt; and
- thighs.
When you notice some acne occurring on the mentioned areas above, it’s probably because you worked out, perspired a lot, and didn’t change out of your damp clothes immediately. It could also happen when you’re doing chores in a very humid room with bad ventilation, making you sweat. Another is when you shave or wax too often, hair follicles get irritated that results to ingrown hair. This is why you should know how to prevent acne, especially during the summer.
HOW can I prevent acne breakouts especially during the summer?
Don’t let breakouts ruin your summer of fun. Here are some tips you can do to combat acne breakouts – every day of the year.
- Wash your face daily, preferably three times a day. Use a facial cleanser that is suited for your skin type. Make sure to do this in the morning, midday, and at night.
- Use a gentle toner that is suited to your skin type to remove the oil and dirt left when you washed your face. Do this twice daily, in the morning and night.
- In between the use of toner, use cleansing wipes to rid your skin of excess oil production. You can use this in any part of your body, especially after an activity that leaves you soaked in sweat.
- Don’t let excess oil sit on your face for too long. Use oil control sheets to help absorb excess oil and to avoid any chance of acne to develop.
- Don’t exfoliate too much. Exfoliation literally clears your face with everything – dead skin cells, surface dirt, and excess oil – signaling your oil glands to produce more oil to compensate for what’s lost. Schedule your exfoliation once a week.
- Avoid moisturizers especially for oily skin types, use sunscreen instead. Your face is already naturally moisturized because of the heat, using moisturizers would only cause acne-breakouts. Sunscreen with at least SPF 50 helps moisturize the skin while protecting you from the sun. It is the number one skincare product to avoid skin damage caused by the sun, so this is a win-win situation, really.
- Minimize the use of makeup. Stick to the basics and use non-comedogenic products to avoid breakouts. If possible, skip it all together! Caking your face with layers of makeup clog your pores even more. Use tinted sunscreen as your makeup base instead of heavy foundation. Your skin needs to breathe (and get protected).
- When you do have an acne (or two), use an acne spot solution to help clear active acne lesions faster. Acne spot solutions relieve inflammation, redness, and sometimes stinging pain. It is best to use at night to let the acne absorb the product’s healing properties overnight.
- Do NOT pop or scratch active acne lesions. In fact, STOP touching your face at all. Touching your face will irritate your skin. More so, it will introduce added dirt and acne-causing bacteria which we are avoiding.
- When you exercise, it is better if you take a bath immediately to avoid getting stuck in sweat-soaked clothes. While we’re on that subject, wear loose clothing with lightweight materials such as cotton which absorbs sweat without trapping heat.
- Use shampoo and conditioner with less harsh chemicals. Try to find a product that has salicylic acid, tea tree oil, or aloe vera to reduce itching, drying, and flaking of the scalp. Make sure to rinse your hair backwards to avoid natural scalp/hair oil to drip on your back which can cause back acne.
- Also use a gentle body soap/wash that contains salicylic acid and non-comedogenic properties. It will rid the body of excess oil while treating active acne lesions. It also helps to exfoliate the body to remove dead skin cells, allowing the skin to breathe.
- Change your sheets as often as you can. If dirt and grime stick on your clothes, what more on the bed that you lie on every single night?
It may be a tedious task, but it’s a part of your self-care plan to help yourself be the best version you can be. Sometimes it takes a positive outlook in life before it reflects on exterior beauty. Other times physical beauty is the catalyst to have a better perspective. Either way, I say do whatever helps you sleep better at night. I hope you learned something from these tips and that you actually apply them if need be.
Factors That Affect the Skin
Posted on August 7, 2020 by Shaine Chua
More than protecting us from microbes and other stressors, our skin is one of the non-verbal signs that shows our emotions – it glows when we’re happy or develops acne when we’re stressed. We need to take extra measures to take care of our skin to take care of our overall well-being. To do this properly, we need to know first what affects its condition. We’ll talk about internal and external factors that affect the skin.
Internal Factors are those within our body – its activities and what makes you, you.
- Genetics make up your skin type (normal, sensitive, oily, combination), color, and texture, as well as your biological skin aging (that is the decline of collagen production and moisture retention)
- Hormonal changes during pregnancy triggers hyperpigmentation on the skin while puberty makes adolescents prone to acne
- Other health conditions such as diabetes can cause dryness, itching, and pigmentation, Parkinson’s can cause either oily or dry skin, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome can cause dark patches, acne, and skin tags, among others
External Factors are outside forces – environment and lifestyle – that damage the skin.
- Overexposure to UV rays cause sunburn, pigmentation or sunspots, premature skin aging, melasma, and worst, skin cancer
- Extreme temperatures cause dry skin (cold), oily skin with triggered acne production and excessive sweating (hot), and increased sensitivity (low humidity)
- Lifestyle which includes the hours of proper sleep we get (skin renewal), amount of exercise we do (blood circulation), the type of food we eat, and even the amount of stress we are in (acne, wrinkles, and fine lines), all of which contribute to our overall health and skin condition, including smoking (breaks down essential vitamins) and alcohol consumption (dehydration)
- Skincare products with harsh chemicals can damage the skin, as well as the use of products that are not compatible with your skin type
- Medicines taken to treat a heath condition can heighten your skin’s sensitivity
There are a lot of ways you can do to avoid damaging the quality of your skin and maintaining it, especially when the causes are external factors. However, you need to consult a trusted doctor when your concerns are related to an existing health condition.
7 Ways to Practice Self-Love During a Pandemic
Posted on October 23, 2020 by Shaine Chua
With the COVID-19 pandemic still bringing uncertainty in our lives, it’s normal to feel anxious, scared, or depressed. Everything is changing and everyone is at risk. Some people start working from home, while others are unfortunately laid off. Students go online, while some can’t afford such. Every day, it’s becoming more and more difficult to keep calm or be worry-free. Let self-love help you through this grueling time with these following tips:
- Stay informed, but minimize your browsing time on social media
It’s important to get the facts straight. This way, you’ll be up to date with the status of the pandemic and you’ll know what precautions to take. That said, look for news and updates from credible sources such as the World Health Organization. Social media is rampant with fake news that causes unnecessary panic, stress, and anxiety.
- Practice good habits
A healthy body is a healthy mind. Eating well, sleeping right, and exercising may release “happy hormones” (endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine) which improve mood and promote our general well-being Aside from reducing feelings of stress and anxiety, taking care of yourself may boost your immune system which makes for a good defense against the pandemic.
- Meditate and breathe
Ten minutes of relaxed breathing can make all the difference in the world. There are a lot of different meditation and breathing techniques available, so you can just do what makes you feel most comfortable – you can engage in yoga, tai chi, or mantra meditation. It may be hard at first but clearing your head and simply breathing will help ease feelings of stress and anxiety.
- Keep yourself busy
Soaking in a tub, baking cookies, lounging in your pajamas while watching TV, reading a book or a magazine, taking care of your plants or pets – these relaxing activities will bring you comfort and reduce feelings of loneliness. In times of being quarantined or of a pandemic, it’s important to do activities that you truly enjoy.
- Stay in touch with your family and loved ones
Much like practicing good habits, connecting with the people you love will make you feel better (due to the “love hormone,” oxytocin). Talking to friends, even virtually, can help the both of you reduce feelings of isolation that cause depression.
- Protect yourself and the community
Wash and sanitize your hands frequently and properly for at least 20 seconds (try singing a nursery song to keep you occupied). Sanitize frequently touched surfaces such as tables, light switches, and doorknobs. Stay at home as much as possible. You’ll never know what you can catch or spread outside. When you do go out, take precaution – WEAR YOUR MASK AND PRACTICE SOCIAL DISTANCING.
- Plan for the future
Focusing on cancelled plans will just stress you out. Instead, focus on what you can actually do once everything goes back to normal. Having something to look forward to brings a very much needed excitement into your otherwise anxiety-filled life. Before the pandemic, self-love is a concept wherein you’ll finally let go, branch out, and prioritize your own wants. During the pandemic, self-love evolved into a means by which we cope and keep our sanity intact during a crisis. I hope that these activities will help you feel better if you’re feeling helpless, anxious, sad, angry, or panicked. Remember: this too shall pass. Hopefully, we’ll see the end of this soon, but right now, we’ll do what we can to live beautifully in the midst COVID-19.
6 Beauty Tips to Stay Fresh During the Holiday Season
Posted on September 24, 2020 by Shaine Chua
One thing, and one thing only, comes to mind when we see Jose Mari Chan on all of our social media pages, it’s Christmastime! Just kidding. Though still celebrating occasions mostly at home, it doesn’t diminish the festive spirit of the holiday season. We still rummage through our storage rooms to take the Christmas decorations out and go (online) shopping for gifts. What’s more, we try to schedule Zoom meetings to virtually get together with friends and loved ones. Different methods, same goal – tomato, tomahto.
Come to think of it, we’re as busy going about our errands outside the house as we are in our homes (if not more). With that said, staying up late with puffy eyes and bloated tummies from all the caffeine and junk food is in all time high! Here are some beauty tips to help you stay fresh during the holiday season.
- Keep hydrated at all times
Drinking water is beneficial for our bodies, both inside and out. It improves the overall quality of our skin with an added bonus of reduced puffiness and acne breakouts given the party mood that the holidays bring. In answer to the famous question, “how much water is enough?,” a study states that, on a daily basis, men should drink at least 3.7 liters of water and 2.7 liters for women.
- Exfoliate and moisturize that skin
Let’s face it, Filipinos mostly have an oily skin type because of being in a tropical country. But the “ber months” (as we fondly call the last four months leading up to Christmas day) bring forth the unusual cool breeze that may lead to dry skin. Avoid dull, cracked skin by exfoliating at least once or twice a week. Moisturizing, on the other hand, is a daily go-go to keep the skin fresh and supple. Try this hydrating gel if you’re experiencing intense dry skin.
- You deserve to put that makeup on
Just because you’re at home doesn’t mean you can’t prep as if you’re going out and about. What better way to put you in a festive mood than being all dolled-up? Besides, you’re doing it to make you feel good about yourself. Grab that primer that’ll help your makeup last for the entire day. Cover up dark eyes from a sleepless night or redness from a night of drinking. Paint your lips red and make your eyes shine bright with glittery shadows. Go the extra mile even if you’re just partying online!
- Try to still eat right
Your schedule will inevitably get so hectic that you’ll skip meals and munch on junk food which is very bad for your health (and your skin!). Try to minimize eating salty food, refined sugar, and processed food. If you’re crunching for time, you can always pre-prep your food, keep them in the fridge, and pop them in the microwave during mealtimes. Also, food supplements can give you the extra nutritional help on busy days.
- When in doubt, drink a glass of red wine
There is a plethora of options when it comes to alcoholic beverages. We’re accustomed to fruity cocktails or the handy bottle of beer, but if you want to stay fresh while getting acceptably drunk for the holidays, go for the red wine. Red wine is filled with antioxidants from grapes that’s good for the heart and the skin.
- Post-party skincare is a must
Wherever you are and whatever you do, do NOT sleep with your makeup on. It will do the exact opposite of staying fresh – leaving your skin dull with clogged pores. You need to let your skin breathe and renew overnight. Erase every trace of makeup on your face, cleanse your skin properly, and use serums that can help rejuvenate your skin.
The most important tip of all is to have fun. Don’t get sucked into the pressure of finding the perfect gift or of organizing the perfect quarantine Christmas celebration. The pandemic is stressful as it already is. Quarantine or not, enjoy the journey without focusing solely on the destination – the days leading up to Christmas is as an exciting experience as the Christmas day is. I hope that you find these tips helpful for you. Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas!
Avoid “Bad Hair Days” with These Hair Care Tips Specific to Your Hair Type
Posted on April 4, 2020 by Shaine Chua
When your hair is your crowning glory, bad hair days are the absolute worst; even more so when you are to attend an event or go to an important meeting and you can’t seem to tame your wild hair. The problem may seem trivial, but when you’re experiencing it, you wish more than anything that you’ve taken better care of your hair.
Hair care is a commonly neglected concept that should be straightened out; it is as important as taking care of your skin. With that in mind, the first step in taking care of your hair is knowing the TYPE of hair that you have. Different hair types require different care, so below are the hair types to help you identify the hair care you need to do.
TYPE 1: STRAIGHT | |
---|---|
Definition | Required Hair Care |
– no natural curl from root to tip – immune to curly styling – often fine, soft, shiny, and silky – oily | – wash daily with dry or mild shampoo – avoid serums or butters – use flat hair brush – brush with dry oil to avoid frizz – use lightweight conditioner every once in a while, apply from the ends going upwards – avoid over- brushing |
TYPE 2: WAVY | ||
---|---|---|
Type 2A | – gentle and light curl from the middle to the tip of the hair – thin and fine texture | – avoid oil-based or creamy products – use light mousse at the base of the hair for better volume – use hydrating and moisturizing shampoo and conditioner – use light hair oil to control frizz |
Type 2B | – more defined curls from the middle to the tip of the hair – frizzy, medium texture – best for balayage hairstyle |
TYPE 3: CURLY | ||
---|---|---|
Type 3A | – definite, loose, and springy curls – immune to straight styling – thick and shiny texture – frizzy and easily tangled | – wash your hair every other day only – use moisturizing shampoo and conditioner when washing – use curl refreshers on “no-wash days” – use diffuser to control frizz – use hair oil, mousse, or cream from root to tip for better control of curls – use wide-toothed comb |
Type 3B | – definite, tight curls – immune to straight styling – frizzy and easily tangled | – wash your hair every two to three days only – use moisturizing shampoo and conditioner when washing – use curl refreshers on “no-wash days” – use diffuser to control frizz – use curl milk for hydration with the use of a detangler brush |
Type 3C | – definite, very tight curls – immune to straight styling – overly frizzy, tangled, and dry has full volume | – wash your hair once a week only – use moisturizing shampoo and conditioner when washing – use curl refreshers on “no-wash days” – deep condition for hydration – use styling cream for bouncier curls – always use your fingers in applying products |
TYPE 4: COILY/KINKY | ||
---|---|---|
Type 4A | – soft and delicate tight curls – dry and prone to damage – may have a coarse or fine texture | use deep conditioning masks, butters, or cream for hydration – use curl butter for coarse texture – massage your roots with hair oil for more hydration – finger-coil your curls with gel for more definition and volume |
Type 4B | – wiry, Z-shaped tight curls that is prone to shrinking – dry and prone to damage – may have a coarse or fine texture | – use leave-in conditioner for hydration – use lightweight gel, oil, or cream to set your curls – use oil-based serum for better moisturization |
Type 4C | – tightest, most delicate Z-shaped curls that is prone to intense shrinkage – dry and prone to damage – may have a coarse or fine texture | – use leave-in conditioner, oil, and cream for better moisturization – use thicker oil solution to retain moisture air dry hair – use a satin bonnet if you sleep with wet hair |
Just remember that no one hair is the same. It is affected by various factors such as density (amount/number of hair), porosity (moisture absorption), texture (pattern/shape of hair), structure (thickness/thinness of hair strands), and scalp moisture condition. What you need to do is the good old fashioned trial and error method. Find out what’s best for your hair and stick to that routine
Since the scalp’s condition is one of the factors of hair care, here’s a BONUS CONTENT on SCALP CARE.
- Eat properly. Your food intake helps with your scalp and hair condition. Fruits and vegetable aid in the production of healthy cells while protein supports healthy hair growth.
- Reduce hair treatments. Treatments like hair coloring, straightening, and the like use chemicals that cause scalp irritation and dryness. Switch out products if this happens or regulate salon appointments.
- Maintain moisture. Avoid directing your head under hot water when bathing or showering as it will cause dryness. A dry scalp leads to other problems like itching. Lessen the use of hairdryers as well.
- Exfoliate. Do this at least once a week before shampooing to get rid of dead skin cells.
Treatments to Remedy Sagging Skin PLUS Homecare Tips to Delay It
Posted on May 23, 2020 by Shaine Chua
The main and most common cause of sagging skin is aging, and two proteins play the lead role to this: collagen and elastin. We won’t go into the technicalities but basically, those two proteins are the main factors that keep our skin plump and supple. As we age, our collagen and elastin production start to slow down, causing our skin to sag. Other than aging, weight loss and gain, pregnancy, and rare medical conditions factor in on sagging skin.
In this article, we will talk about treatments to remedy sagging skin and homecare tips to delay it from Manny & Pie Calayan Clinic’s resident Dermatologist, Dra. Pie Cabrera-Calayan. Read on to find out.
Treatments to Remedy Sagging Skin
Micro-focused Ultrasound Lasers
- What: Ultherapy Premier
- How: Uses micro-focused ultrasound with visualization (MFUV) technology to send targeted heat to the deeper layer of the skin, triggering collagen production
- Where: Face, neck, décolletage
Anti-Aging Infusions
- What: Elixir, Bright Eyes, Premium Lift, Supreme Tonic
- How: Injecting of an organic solution directly into the treatment area to hydrate the skin, treat wrinkles, and improve elasticity
- Where: Areas of the face and eyes, stretch marks, scar tissues
Non-Surgical Lift

- Where: Face, neck, arms, tummy
Homecare Tips to Delay Sagging Skin from Dra. Pie Cabrera-Calayan
Diet and exercise
Gaining muscle mass through weightlifting can solve the problem of loose and sagging skin. Just think of it this way:
Increased Muscles Mass = Toned Body + Tighter Skin
Diet – Exercise = Sagging Skin
Drink looooooots of water daily
Water helps improve skin elasticity, a sure way to keep the skin firm and supple.
Use home kitchen ingredients for skincare
Coconut oil and olive oil are good natural remedies for skin tightening. Massage it on your face, neck, and chest at night then rinse. Use plain yoghurt with lime juice to tighten pores. Use fresh lemon juice to reduce wrinkles.
Go natural with apple peels
More than the health benefits of eating an apple (e.g. boosts the immune system, helps with bowel movement, etc.), its peels are a helpful anti-aging tool! Apple peels are filled with Vitamins A, C, and E which are antioxidants to prevent pre-mature aging and improve fine lines. Just rub the inside of an apple peel on your face, leave it on for five (5) minutes then rinse it off.
Topical skincare products
Use lotions and anti-aging serums to delay the formulation of wrinkles! As always, applying sunscreen daily is the best defense against premature aging.
Take over-the-counter supplements
Supplements containing Vitamins A, B, C, and E help improve or maintain collagen production and hydrate the skin. Although there is no sufficient evidence of its safety and efficacy, collagen supplements are rising to fame which increases the collagen in the body.
“Prevention is better than cure” is as cliché as they come, but it is true (not to mention, cheaper!). Be reminded that the most common cause of sagging skin is aging, so follow the homecare tips to delay its process. For major cases, there’s still hope! There are non-surgical and surgical remedies to sagging skin. What’s important is that you know your options and be educated.
2021: ReNEW the Beauty in YOU
Posted on January 2, 2021 by Shaine Chua
Another (hope-filled, COVID-crashed) year gone. 2020 has surely tested our limits, pushed our boundaries, and hardened our determination to pull through, survive, and stay afloat. But that’s the thing, we didn’t really “move forward” goals-wise. Travel more? X Start your own business? X Save up for a new car? X The pandemic has put a damper on all of our 2020 plans. So, whatever was supposed to be achieved in 2020 will be done in 2021 – claim it!
Yes, COVID-19 is still upon us, but we are now more aware of the virus and how we can be protected against it. It’s the dawn of the new normal – if you can’t adapt, you will drop. Below are some ways to help you renew the beauty in you.
Reorganize
The stress of the pandemic might’ve scattered your plans and mind all over the place. Take stock of the things you’ve already done and what still needs to be done. You can’t reorganize if ideas and thoughts are flying in the air. Grab a paper, notebook, planner, calendar, your laptop, or smartphone, whichever you prefer. Make a list of your goals and set deadlines to give you the extra push. To be on top of things, write a daily to-do list and schedule your day’s activities.
TIP: Aim for small wins once in a while to give yourself a sense of accomplishment, a pat in the back if you will.
Re-strategize
Writing your goals isn’t the end, but the first step in achieving the renewed you. Ask yourself, “how?” Make a game plan. First step is arranging all your goals in a timely manner by prioritizing what needs to get done first. If one goal is overwhelming for you, break it down into smaller, more achievable goals. Identify which areas you’ll require help along the way and communicate it to that person.
TIP: Stop procrastinating and throw away negativity.
Restrike
Let go of your inhibitions, take a (healthy) risk, and put your plan into action – immediately. Don’t lose momentum and stop waiting around. There’s not a perfect time nor a flawless plan (in the beginning). So what you can (and should) do is to readjust your plan should the need arise. It’s important to keep track of your progress to see where you already are at and what else you need to do. Of course, precautionary measures must still be in place to be safe from the Coronavirus.
TIP: Visualize the end goal to keep you motivated to get there.
I believe that we are in our most beautiful when we do something to make our lives significantly better for ourselves and the people around us – when we simply enjoy life’s finest. You might not realize it, but you have the inherent ability to use this time to change the course of your life for the best. I read this somewhere from the internet, “2020 was the time for learning, 2021 is the time to apply it.” Wherever you are, physically and mentally, the new year is bringing you a renewed hope to actively chase the beauty in you.
Skin Care Trends of 2021
Posted on January 14, 2021 by Shaine Chua
New year, new me. This is probably everyone’s recurring mantra every January 1st. It could be sporting a new hairstyle, taking on a new hobby, or spending more time with your family. Whatever it is, the new year always inspires us to make even the littlest drop of change in our daily lives.
With that comes the ever-changing trend in the skin care industry, especially now that the COVID-19 pandemic is still prevalent. Hopefully, the pandemic will soon leave us! But for now, the trends are being affected by the occurrence of COVID-19. I’ve done my research. Of all the articles I’ve read online, here are three skin care trends of 2021 that are consistently present in all articles.
1. “MASKNE” SOLUTIONS
Face masks will be a part of our lives in an undetermined period of time in the future. Keeping our health safe from the pandemic is taking its toll on our skin. The common irritation we experience with mask-wearing is acne (hence the coined term “maskne” mask + acne). But other than that, we may experience dryness, itching, and even chafing.
There will be an increase in demand on chemical and laser peels, as well as treatments that will exfoliate and moisturize the skin. Skin care products that are gentle with more natural ingredients will dominate in the market, as well as acne spot solutions.
2. “ZOOM EFFECT” FACE LIFT
Workplaces shifted to a temporary work set-up on the 2nd quarter of 2020 up to present. Dubbed as the “Zoom Effect,” it is the image people literally see of themselves on their video screens during Zoom meetings or on any other video messaging platform. More and more people have more time to scrutinize their wrinkles and dark eyes.
This 2021, there will be an increase in demand on Botox to address wrinkles and fine lines on the forehead, crow’s feet, and glabellar area, and fillers to improve unflattering shadows or features on the lips, cheeks, or chin.
With mask-wearing, there’s an emphasis on the upper half of the face. That said, there will also be a rise in eye bag removal procedures, particularly on upper and lower blepharoplasty treatments.
BONUS CONTENT: While we’re at the point of discovered insecurities through video conferences, another issue that needs attending to, and is increasing in popularity, is blue light protection. High Energy Visible (HEV) Light, or blue light, is emitted through tech screens (phones, laptops, tablets, TVs, etc.). As with UV exposure, HEV exposure leads to free radical damage such as photoaging and hyperpigmentation. Other than putting on sunscreen, you can block blue light with some ingredients like niacinamide or zinc oxide.
3. AT-HOME DEVICES
Since some are still worried to go for an in-person facial treatment, the demand will rise in the use of skin care tools which can be used easily at home.
Beauty Rollers/Jade Rollers/Facial Rollers are tools that can be used to massage the face. When done correctly, it can lift the contours of the face and help in the absorption of skincare products.
Microneedling Tools/Derma Rollers are devices with microneedles that prick the skin to produce tiny lesions onto the face. This method helps serums penetrate more deeply into the skin, reduce the appearance of scars, and lessen hyperpigmentation. Just be reminded to avoid passing through the eye area.
The important thing here is hygiene. Cleanse all your tools before and after usage. Avoid sharing as well, and don’t overdo it. If problems arise, consult your dermatologist.

FILLERS vs BOTOX vs THREADS: Which Minimally Invasive Procedure is Right for You? [Part 1 of 3]
Posted on April 6, 2021 by Shaine Chua
As we age, we lose volume on fats and tissues which results to the visible signs of aging – sagging skin, hollowed cheeks, and crinkled eyes. This is a natural occurrence that everyone will go through; however, there are ways to delay the process and it doesn’t have to involve surgery. As we go further, we will discuss your options on minimally invasive procedures to find out which one suits your needs best
TERMS TO WATCH OUT FOR | |
---|---|
Static Wrinkles | deep lines caused by loss of skin elasticity |
Dynamic Wrinkles | lines developed from repeated facial movements, a.k.a. expression lines |
WHAT ARE FILLERS?
Fillers (also called Dermal Fillers, Soft Tissue Fillers, or Wrinkle Fillers) are substances injected under the skin to temporarily increase the volume of the treatment area, improving its appearance due to added plumpness.
The most common substance used in fillers is Hyaluronic Acid since it’s a naturally occurring substance found in the body that’s responsible to keep the skin plump and hydrated. A synthetic, biocompatible substance used in fillers is made of Polylactic Acid which stimulates collagen production. Other types and brands of fillers are available which your doctor will further discuss with you.
WHAT ARE FILLERS USED FOR?
As the name suggests, fillers fill in the gap between fine lines and static wrinkles which are found in the:
- Corners of the mouth
- Lines across the cheeks
- Along the neck
Fillers can also be used to plump thin lips or small chin, to fill in hollow areas of the face, and to improve the appearance of recessed scars.
Next week, we’ll talk about Botox. Stay tuned!
FILLERS vs BOTOX vs THREADS: Which Minimally Invasive Procedure is Right for You? [Part 2 of 3]
Posted on April 17, 2021 by Shaine Chua
Last week in this series, we talked about the basics of Fillers. This time, we will go into the basics of Botox. As we go along, we will encounter terms such as static wrinkles which are deep lines caused by loss of skin elasticity, and dynamic wrinkles which are lines developed from repeated facial movements (a.k.a. expression lines). Read on to find out more about Botox.
WHAT IS BOTOX?
Injectable Botox comes from the purified form of Botulinum toxin, from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Since it’s a toxin, it can be very dangerous in the hands of nonprofessionals, but it is helpful for cosmetic and medical purposes when used by doctors in small doses.
The term “Botox” is loosely used to refer to the procedure that involves the injection of Botulinum toxin since the first US FDA-approved brand to use such toxin for cosmetic use was that of Botox. The name just stuck as it also sounds like a shortened name of Botulinum toxin. Other brands include Xeomin, Neuronox, Dysport, and Myobloc, among others.
When injected, the toxin temporarily paralyzes muscle activity by preventing the release of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. As a result, the underlying muscle does not contract – simply, movement will cease to exist only for a period of time.
WHAT IS BOTOX USED FOR?
Because Botox involves temporary freezing of muscles, it can only improve the appearance of dynamic wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles are found in:
- Forehead Lines
- Crow’s Feet
- Glabellar/Frown Lines
- Laugh Lines
- Nasalis Lines
It could also be used for the treatment of Bruxism/TMJ Disorder when injected in the masseter muscles. As an effect, the jawline becomes more defined. Another use of Botox is the treatment of excessive sweating of the underarms, palms (hands), and soles (feet).
Next week, we’ll talk about threads. Stay tuned!
FILLERS vs BOTOX vs THREADS: Which Minimally Invasive Procedure is Right for You? [Part 3 of 3]
Posted on April 24, 2021 by Shaine Chua
In this series, we have gone over the basics of Fillers and Botox. By now we have an idea of what to use for our specific needs, but then there’s still threads. In the final installment of this series, we will go over the basics of threads, other guidelines to know about minimally invasive procedures, and a summary of all three procedures. Read on to find out.
WHAT ARE THREADS?
Threads are made of a biodegradable, flexible, and absorbable polydioxanone (PDO) material that is used in Thread Lift procedures. Thread Lift is a minimally invasive procedure that involves the insertion of PDO threads below the skin to reposition facial tissues, creating a lifted effect. It also stimulates the production of new collagen and fibrous tissue along the threads to further lift and tighten the skin.
There are three different kinds of PDO threads that differ in structure which provides different results. Mono threads are singular sutures used for minimal lifting; cog threads are barbed sutures that hook into the skin to provide better lifting and even more collagen production; screw threads are one to two intertwined threads to provide volume on sunken areas of the skin.
WHAT ARE THREADS USED FOR?
PDO Threads are commonly used for the lifting of the following areas:
- Cheeks
- Jowls
- Neck
However, it can be done on other areas of the face (such as wrinkles along the forehead and eye area) upon consultation.
PDO Thread Lift is a temporary solution and does not provide the same maximum lifting that is expected from a surgical face lift procedure. The threads will naturally dissolve once the effect wears off. It also does not address concerns on excess skin to which surgery is the solution.
OTHER GUIDELINES FOR MINIMALLY INVASIVE PROCEDURES
- Effects are temporary
- Fillers can last between one to two years
- Botox can last between six to eight months
- Threads can last up to two years
- It can be done again once the effect wears off
- There can be mild swelling or bruising on the treatment area; apply cold compress for 30 minutes every 2 hours for 24 to 48 hours post-procedure
- Don’t eat seafood and salty food for (1) week post-procedure
- Avoid strenuous exercise for (1) week post-procedure
- It can’t be done to pregnant and lactating women
SUMMARY
Fillers are used to treat fine lines and deep wrinkles. Botox is used to treat expression lines. Threads are used to lift sagging skin on the mid-face or neck area. These are all minimally invasive procedures that provide temporary results. Make sure to consult a doctor to know more about the procedures before deciding on which one is best for your needs
Renew the Beauty in Your Relationship
Posted on February 11, 2021 by Shaine Chua
Love is beautiful; love is easy – or at least it should be. What makes love and sustaining relationships difficult is human complexity. Add in the anxiety of the Coronavirus pandemic, so the stress is just all too overwhelming. Couples in long-term relationships cooped up 24/7 at home might have discovered by now that it’s not all roses, while couples who are starting to build something new might find it difficult to weather a long-distance relationship. As in any case, maintaining a relationship is so much better than repairing damages. Here are some tips to renew the beauty in your relationship:
TIP #1: LEARN YOUR PARTNER’S LOVE LANGUAGE
According to Gary Chapman, a person’s love language shows how one expresses and experiences love in a romantic relationship. It could be through words of affirmation, acts of service, receiving gifts, quality time, or physical touch. Identifying what makes your partner tick could be the key in making your connection deeper.
Let’s say your partner experiences love more through quality time than receiving gifts, then it’s a clue for you to spend more time with than money for them. See the difference? There’s no harm in trying the quiz and figuring out if it works for you and your partner.
TIP #2: COMMUNICATE AND UNDERSTAND
Both are pillars that make a strong relationship. Don’t be shy in telling your partner exactly what you need. Though it seems that you’ve been together for so long that you know each other front and back, that’s not always the case. You are still two separate persons with individual needs. Knowing exactly what the other needs can help sustain a happy relationship and avoid unnecessary conflict.
Talk about your future and plan accordingly. Reminisce about the past. Share what happened at work. Laugh about a funny story. Talking to your partner about anything and everything keeps you connected.
TIP #3: CONTROL YOUR EMOTIONS
Don’t let out your frustration, anxiety, or anger towards your partner – they’re not your emotional punching bag. Understand that they are also under a lot of stress, so getting in their necks won’t help both of your physical and mental health. Instead, help each other process these emotions and allow the other to help you carry the burden. Anything heavy that’s carried by two people is a lot lighter!
TIP #4: MANAGE YOUR TIME
Set your daily schedule that includes activities both together and alone. It’s important for your personal growth and mental health to have time for yourself. Take a break from work and your partner to prevent burnout, but also ensure to spend enough time together even for simple activities like eating a meal or lounging with the TV on. Don’t neglect intimacy as well; it helps in keeping the stress at bay.
TIP #5: NEVER STOP DATING
Dating is always the fun part of a relationship everything was light and easy. Dating is when you put your best foot forward, trying to impress the other person, trying to meet expectations but without feeling any pressure. So, don’t stop the effort whether you’ve been together for a few months or several years. Just because you’re together doesn’t mean you have to be complacent. Go on well-planned date nights. Plan a romantic weekend away from your kids (if you have any). Always pursue the interest of the other. Show small tokens of love. All of these will keep the fire burning in your relationship; don’t lose the flame.
Don’t let the pandemic ruin your beautiful relationship. Happy Valentine’s Day!
Non-Invasive Body Slimming Treatments for the Summer
Posted on March 15, 2021 by Manny & Pie Calayan Clinic
It’s summertime and it’s time to hit the beach! Following the guidelines for a safe summer vacation, we’re all so excited to pack our carefully picked swimsuits for that Instagramable golden hour photo. (Don’t forget to pack your sunscreen, too!)
To achieve that picture-perfect social media post, here are some non-invasive body slimming treatments that you can do to get ready for the summer:
Tenor Laser Lipo
WHAT: Tenor Laser Lipo is a skin-tightening and body-contouring treatment that uses radiofrequency heat in targeting fat deposits and contours.
HOW: Oil will be applied on the area to be treated. The laser handpiece will then be hovered over the treatment area on a slow, circular motion for a full 30-minute cycle. A thermometer is constantly used to check the heat temperature of the treatment area which should be maintained at 40°C. Once the cycle is complete, the oil will be wiped clean using paper towels.
FREQUENCY: It is recommended to do this procedure once a week for a series of treatments to achieve your desired results.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: For safety reasons, this procedure is not allowed for pregnant and lactating women.
L-Carnitine Push
WHAT: L-Carnitine Push is a direct injection of a fat-burning supplement into the vein.
HOW: A registered nurse will cleanse the insertion site before and after injecting the L-Carnitine Push. It would take about 10 to 15 minutes to finish the procedure.
FREQUENCY: It is recommended to do this procedure once a week for a series of treatments to achieve your desired results.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: For safety reasons, this procedure is not allowed for pregnant and lactating women. Be reminded that you have to avoid drinking caffeinated beverages (such as coffee, energy drink, sports drink, etc.) after the procedure to avoid palpitations.
MesoFat Injection
WHAT: MesoFat Injection is a weight-loss treatment that involves injecting pharmaceutical agents and vitamins directly into cellulites, disintegrating them and flushing them out of the body through urine or perspiration.
HOW: A doctor will identify the areas where the solution must be directly injected. Once the areas are identified, it will be cleansed prior to the injection of the weight-loss solution. Since the cellulites will be flushed through urine or perspiration, it is recommended to drink a minimum of 1 to 2 liters of water per day.
FREQUENCY: It is recommended to do this procedure once every 1 or 2 weeks, in combination with Tenor Laser Lipo, for a series of treatments to achieve maximum results.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: For safety reasons, this procedure is not allowed for pregnant and lactating women. Be reminded to avoid massages, going to saunas and jacuzzies, and drinking alcoholic beverages after the procedure to avoid complications.
In all of these procedures, your lifestyle plays a key role in achieving your desired results. You must not rely heavily on the procedures; instead, maintain a healthy lifestyle by observing proper diet and exercise. Guidelines to Enjoy a Safe Summer During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Posted on March 5, 2021 by Shaine Chua
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there still not enough evidence that the Coronavirus can be spread through water. Mostly, the virus is spread through respiratory droplets of an infected person to another person. With that said, can you recklessly go to the beach? Of course not!
Before going to the beach
- Stay at home if you have any COVID-19 symptoms to prevent infecting other people
- Stay at home if you are high risk for COVID-19
- Do your research of the vacation place prior to visit; make sure that precautionary measures are in place and that it is not packed with people
Preparing for the beach trip
- Choose a less crowded beach area and go during off-peak schedules. This will ensure that you’ll go when there’s fewer people. Mid-week would be the best time you could enjoy with your family with less anxiety
- Pack your own things. Bring all your basic necessities along with your own towels, toiletries, extra sanitizers, and sunscreens. Make sure to also pack your face masks, drinking water, and other necessary swim gear to avoid renting them out. You can’t be too sure if the gears were properly sanitized in between use
During the beach trip
- Practice social distancing inside the water and while walking or lounging outside public spaces. Don’t go near people who are not a part of your household
- Wear your mask whenever you’re not swimming or eating. This is especially important when it’s difficult to practice social distancing
- Wash your hands frequently especially before eating; you’ll never know if you’ve come in contact with an infected surface. Keep your hands clean by washing with clean soap and water for 20 seconds
- Do not share your things to other people, especially if you don’t know them
- Apply your sunscreen at all times
There’s nothing wrong in trying to enjoy the summer at the beach as long as precautionary measures are in place. Still be mindful of your safety and that of others’.
The Link Between Acne and Sleep
Posted on November 26, 2020 by Manny & Pie Calayan Clinic
Acne has been one of the top concerns of Manny & Pie Calayan Clinic patients through the years. One question that always pops out during consultation is how one’s sleeping pattern affect their acne condition. Let’s talk more about it here.
Acne VS Pimple
Acne is actually a condition wherein the sebaceous gland produces too much oil, clogging the skin’s pores and hair follicles. As a result, pimples (pus-filled lesions or nodules) are formed on the surface of the skin, as well as whiteheads and blackheads. Depending on the number of pimples and its recurrence, dermatologists can identify the severity of the acne. [Book your appointment here]
Common Causes of Acne
The following are the common causes of acne:
- Genetics (parents experiencing moderate to severe acne breakouts)
- Skin type (combination/oily skin)
- Hormonal changes (in puberty and pregnancy, sometimes during menstrual cycle)
- Certain drugs (corticosteroids, testosterone, and lithium)
- Comedogenic products (in makeup or skincare)
- Diet (refined and processed sugar, milk, white flour, and Omega-6 Fatty Acid)
Sleep and Acne
Time and time again, Science proves that during sleep, our bodies recharge, cells renew, and toxins get flushed away. That’s why it is important to get 9 to 10 hours of sleep at night to take advantage of the body’s ability to reboot. Lack of sleep disrupts the hormonal activities in our bodies and adds stress into it. Any combination of the abovementioned (common causes of acne) plus lack of sleep can worsen acne breakout. So, it’s not just the sleep or your skin type that can aggravate acne breakouts, but a combination of a different factors.
The main reason for sleep to cause acne is cortisol. The level of cortisol in the body increases with stress and lack of sleep. Cortisol is a stress hormone that increases glucose (sugar) in the bloodstream. When it comes to the skin, it increases inflammation and makes the sebaceous glands produce more oil. More oil equals more chances of pimple breaking out of the skin. Other than seeing pimples on your face, you will also notice that your skin will be red and blemished due to an increase in inflammation.
What You Can Do
- Try to change your pillowcase at least once or twice a week. Dirt and oil accumulate on your pillowcase, which will then be transferred to your skin, which in turn will cause bacteria-induced pimple.
- Use cleansers with tea tree oil or toners with salicylic acid to help reduce oil on the skin, especially around the time of women’s menstrual cycle where there’s an imbalance in hormones.
- Exfoliate at least once every two weeks to get rid of dead skin cells, avoiding the clogging of pores.
- Stop touching your face and don’t prick your pimples. Go to skincare clinics, such as Manny & Pie Calayan Clinic to get it professionally done so you can avoid infection and scarring.

Reminiscing on the Little Family Business That Turned 26 Years Old Today
Posted on September 18, 2020 by Manny & Pie Calayan Clinic
Dear Readers,
You would think that having “Celebrity Doctors to the Stars” for parents would make my childhood difficult, but it really is no different than a regular one. You see, Doctors Manny and Pie Calayan are simply Dad and Mom to me. As a kid, it’s only natural to have no clue as to what your parents do for a living. What’s important is that my sisters and I get to eat, play, and sleep – and we sure did! We used to live in an apartment complex with our relatives as neighbors, so we didn’t run out of people to mingle with though our parents took long work hours.
As the years go by along with the undeniable success of our parents in the aesthetics industry, we became more aware of their reputation. We would often go straight to the clinic in Medical Plaza Makati after school and see a long line of patients waiting patiently for their turn to go see Mom or Dad. We especially love to go eat at Manang’s store on the 8th floor – no wonder we became chubby kids!
Teachers would also excuse us in classes to ask about the services that we offer. Yes, “we.” I think it’s just ingrained in the Asian culture to involve the kids in the family business – and involved we were. My older sister, Hanna, is a medical aesthetician in Canada while my younger sister, Andrea, is in medical school in the US. I, on the other hand, is a naturopathy practitioner who was pushed off the deep end when it comes to the family business.
I love Manny & Pie Calayan Clinic and all the memories it gave me. I’ve always had, still have, faith in it growing to where it is now. Mom would say in interviews that I currently manage the business 100%, but I really don’t. I always thought I would do it with my sisters by my side, but I don’t, and that’s okay. Sometimes people grow out of the things they once thought they wanted. Anyway, I’m still learning the ropes by experience with the guidance of my parents who made it this far in the industry.
Twenty-six years is no joke. The COVID-19 pandemic tested our foundations even more. We had to implement drastic measures just to stay afloat. But with tragedy comes an opportunity – we made it possible to go online to reach our loyal patients. Shoutout to our Marketing and Operations Teams! We wouldn’t have made it this far without them whose accomplishments are immeasurable despite of it all. We still have a lot of catching up to do but truly, teamwork makes the dream work.
In behalf of Manny & Pie Calayan Clinic, I would like to thank you all from the bottom of my heart. We owe our 26 beautiful years to you. Moving forward, we promise to serve you even better, with the newest techniques and technologies in the industry. And hey! If I do get a say in the matter, we might open a wellness branch where we treat patients holistically through alternative modalities.
To my Manny & Pie Calayan Clinic family, Happy 26th Anniversary to us! Onwards and upwards!
All my love,
Bernice Calayan
The Truth About Ultherapy Premier in the Eyes of Selina Dagdag-Alas
Posted on July 23, 2021 by Manny & Pie Calayan Clinic
Yesterday, I had the opportunity to meet Selina Dagdag-Alas and watch her undergo the Ultherapy Premier procedure at Manny & Pie Calayan Clinic. Unlike others, Selina was so bubbly during the whole ordeal. Since she and Ms. Bernice, daughter of Doctors Manny and Pie, knew each other from way back (grade school days), their rapport along with Dr. Pie and the nostalgic childhood memories they exchanged were such a delight to witness. Yes, Selina was bravely conversing all throughout the procedure! Mighty tough of her, right? I had a short chat with Selina right after her procedure and picked her brain a bit about her experience with Ultherapy Premier.
1. Hi, Selina! You’re still so young and you obviously take care of your skin. What made you decide to undergo Ultherapy Premier?
Well, I’ve always been a firm believer that good skin is always in. Having good skin is just the best accessory that you can take with you wherever you go, so there’s no such thing as “oh, it’s too early or you’re too young” when it comes to skin care, that’s why I went for Ultherapy Premier.
2. How was your Ultherapy Premier experience? Was it how you expected it to be, or was there anything that you wish was done more, better, or not done at all? Were you satisfied with the treatment?
I was actually pleasantly surprised just ‘cause it was so much better than I expected it to be. I was reading some blogs and reviews online and a lot of people were saying that it was really painful, or that they got really red and they bruised up. Surprisingly for me, I have a very sensitive skin and usually my skin gets red when I do certain procedures, but for this one, it didn’t get red at all. There was very, *very* minimal pain or discomfort, so I was really happy about that.
3. Did your husband, Kevin, say anything to you about doing this treatment?
*laughs* Actually, when I told him that I was getting it (Ultherapy Premier) here with Dra. Pie and Ms. Berns, he wasn’t just permissive, he was actually very supportive about it. He knows the amount of work I put in whenever I have shoots coming up – like I try to get my cardio in, I lessen my sweets and my carbs and all the salty food I take para lumiit yung face ko (so that my face will get smaller), so less puffy. So, I felt like months’ worth of hard work and sacrifices were rolled into that machine, because I felt after the procedure, parang lumiit talaga my face (I felt like my face really got smaller).
4. What do you think is the impact of this procedure to you and how you view yourself?
Well, I guess one of the things that I like most about Ultherapy Premier is that it doesn’t alter or change the way I look. It just defines my features now, just enhances what I have…that’s one of my favorite things about it, given that I think it will also just give me a boost of confidence as well. Of course I’d love to look more attractive for my husband, so that makes me happy, too! We have our upcoming church wedding – we’re already married through a civil ceremony – but we’ll have our church wedding this coming October. I was told that the results get better and better, and the best results come out in three months, so I’m really looking forward to the third month. I’m excited to see the results then!
5. Would you suggest Ultherapy Premier to those who want or need it but are second-guessing their decision?
Oh, if you guys are second-guessing your decision to get it (Ultherapy Premier), I’m here to tell you that it really is painless. They give you a strong pain killer prior to the procedure and they put a numbing cream on the area where it will be administered, so really there is not a lot of discomfort there. Also, there is no downtime. A lot of people call it a “lunchtime procedure,” so you can have it done in between your breaks. So, definitely go for it! If you’re hesitating just because of the pain that you’re hearing about, I’d say that it was very bearable.
6. Any final words to everyone reading this short interview?
We all know that God created us all in our beautiful and own special way and we get to live out our gratitude every day for that, so it’s important to just take care of ourselves also – to eat right, to work out, and to visit our dermatologist regularly just to make sure that our skin is also in good condition.
Selina’s vivaciousness as a sportscaster very well extended outside of the court. Her energy was truly infectious and it was a pleasure talking to her. Thank you for gracing me with your time, Selina!
Ultherapy Premier is a non-invasive procedure that lifts and tightens the skin with the use of micro-focused ultrasound with visualization (MFUV) technology. This procedure is applicable to the following areas:

– Cheek Lift

All About Nose Lift
Posted on April 29, 2020 by Manny & Pie Calayan Clinic
Many of you must have watched Dr. Manny Calayan talk about rhinoplasty or nose lift on Manny & Pie Calayan Clinic’s social media platforms. (If not, here’s the link to the video.) Here, we’re just going to write all the information from the video. You might be wondering what types of nose lift procedures there are and can’t quite remember which timestamp it was mentioned! Continue reading for a quick reference.
Rhinoplasty (or in layman’s term, nose lift) is, at first, a surgical procedure to alter the shape or size of the nose to improve its appearance and the overall structure of the nose. With the development of Science and technology, non-surgical procedures are now available as well.
SIDE NOTE: We might be switching up between the terms rhinoplasty and nose lift. Both mean the same thing, so don’t get confused!
TYPES OF RHINOPLASTY
- Augmentation Rhinoplasty – procedure to increase nasal height by introducing implants (or most recently, cog threads or fillers) to improve the appearance of the nose
- Reduction Rhinoplasty – surgical procedure to reduce or decrease the size of the nose, either the entire nose or just a specific area, to improve overall facial symmetry
For Asians, Augmentation Rhinoplasty is more common as their noses are not as pointed our as straight as that of Caucasians, which we lovingly call “pango” (that basically means undefined nose bridge).
TIP: As per Dr. Manny, you can check whether your nose is “ideal,” basing it on the measurements between your nose and chin. Use your index finger and place its base on your chin on a 90-degree angle. If your index finger is touching the tip of your nose, that means to say your nose is ideal.
TYPES OF AUGMENTATION RHINOPLASTY
- Surgical Rhinoplasty – use of implants
- Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty – minimally invasive procedure without cutting
Let’s talk about it in more detail.
SURGICAL RHINOPLASTY
1. As mentioned, this procedure requires the introduction of implants in the nose (over the nasal bone and under the skin). There are two types of implants; let’s compare them.
Silicone | Gore-Tex | |
---|---|---|
Material | synthetic | polytetra- fluoroethylene (PTFE) |
Texture | hard, unnatural | softer and more natural |
Effect | has more chances of rejections | adheres to the nasal bone |
Results | if without complications, lifetime | lifetime |
2. When it comes to the procedure proper, both are the same. Here’s what you need to know more about Surgical Rhinoplasty:
- Outpatient procedure that lasts for about 30 to 60 minutes
- Patient is under local anesthesia (which means that your nose will numb, but you are awake during the procedure)
- Laboratory exam is not required
- Wound will only be seen on the inner nostril along the nasal columella to avoid distinguishability
- Results will be visible within 3 to 12 months
NOSE TRIMMING
This is the reduction of the bulbous part of the nose which can be done alone or simultaneously with your surgical rhinoplasty (i.e. silicone/Gore-Tex implant procedure). This procedure has three types which are:
- Alar Trimming;
- Base Trimming; and
- Lateral Trimming.
This procedure is done on a case-to-case basis. Some might need just one of the three, two, or sometimes all three. Some patients, on the other hand, are satisfied with the implants alone.
After-Care for Surgical Rhinoplasty and Nose Trimming means the measures to be done to observe proper healing post-operation which are the following:
- Plasters will be placed on the nasal columella and radix which you should remove after 24 hours
- Washing of the treatment area is NOT allowed while there are sutures; however, it is advised to wash after 14 days to ensure that the wound is completely healed
- Sutures will be removed on the 10th day
- Avoid strenuous activities, especially lifting of heavy things
- Don’t eat seafood, seafood products (like shrimp paste and fish sauce), and chicken skin
- Total healing time is up to 3 months
NON-SURGICAL RHINOPLASTY
For those who are afraid of getting cut but still want to enhance their nose, non-surgical rhinoplasty is the sure way to go. It is a temporary and quick fix that could be non- or minimally invasive through fillers and cog threads respectively; let’s differentiate the two.
Fillers | Cog Threads | |
---|---|---|
Component | hyaluronic acid (HA) | poly-dioxanone (PDN) |
Material | protein-based gel | nylon-based thread |
Quantity | 1 to 1.1cc syringe | minimum of 3 threads |
Purpose | bridge augmentation | bridge augmentation |
Effect | absorbable | dissolvable |
Results | up to 1 year | up to 2 years |
Here’s what you need to know more about Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty:
- Manny advises patients to do both fillers and cog threads to make the results longer
- For cog threads, a micropore plaster will be placed for 24 hours on the tip of the nose just to ensure that the tiny insertion hole will heal
- Duration of the treatment is between 5 to 10 minutes, that’s why it’s called a “lunchtime procedure”
That wraps it up! For more information on skin and body care, stay tuned for the next episode of WEBeauty: Talk with Drs. Manny & Pie Calayan.
NON-INVASIVE BREAST AUGMENTATION TREATMENT, POSSIBLE?
So, can breast augmentation really not need surgery?
You read our first few sentences right- yes, breast augmentation can be done without going under the knife! This procedure can now be done through the ever trusty Dermal Fillers.
If dermal fillers sound familiar to you, then it is because these are the gel-like substances injected into the face for rejuvenation! You get the same results from surgical enhancement when dermal fillers are introduced to the breasts: restores and boosts volume, corrects asymmetry, cleavage enhancement, and can even reduce the appearance of scars on the area.
Non-invasive Breast Augmentation is a good alternative to surgery if you don’t want a drastic change in the size of the breast, but still see natural fullness and a more youthful, perkier, and lifted shape and look.
Aside from its benefits, the cherry on top is that because no surgery is involved, it means that you only need shorter downtime and quicker recovery, no need for lengthy hospitalization, and since no tissues were exposed, less trauma to tissues, and reduced risk for infection. The procedure is relatively safe and simple – you just need skilled surgeons to make sure you get your desired outcome.
Undergoing Non-Invasive Breast Augmentation is often what patients try, to first see the possible results of surgical procedures such as implant and fat transplant if they plan to consider these in the future. Before that day comes, the results of this non-invasive procedure are perfect for looking voluptuous in an evening gown or a cute bikini set!
Non-Invasive Breast Augmentation is Manny and Pie Calayan Clinic’s newest offering!
Welcome this top-of-the-line cosmetic procedure that will become the new talk of the town.
Prices start at Php 135,000 – just ping us to book a consultation and see if you’re a good fit for this procedure. We cannot wait for you to flaunt your new look and be more confident with your shape!
Be Christmas-Ready [PART 1]: Beauty Tips from Our Very Own Dermatologist, Dr. Pie
Posted on December 10, 2021 by Manny & Pie Calayan Clinic
Christmas is upon us! The questions we’ve been receiving from our social media accounts are mostly tips on how to have beautiful, glowing skin this holiday season. Finally, Dr. Pie, resident dermatologist here at Manny & Pie Calayan Clinic will give us some tips to achieve the #NoFilter and #NoMakeupLook this Christmas.
BEAUTY TIPS FROM DR. PIE
Get enough sleep.
Dr. Pie: Skin regenerates and repairs best when you sleep. Collagen production also increases overnight, so you will wake up feeling fresher with plumper looking skin.
Don’t skip on your skin care routine.
Dr. Pie: Whatever the season, your skin care routine is your basic maintenance to a healthy, glowing skin.
Drink lots of water.
Dr. Pie: Moisturizers can only do so much. You need to be hydrated inside and out! Not having enough water will make your skin dry and dull. Besides, you’d want to drink alcohol during the festivities. Drinking water will help you flush out its toxins.
Eat healthy food.
Dr. Pie: Surely, you can’t help but eat lots of sweet and processed food during your holiday celebration. These will breakdown collagen on the skin and increase in oil production (sweet food), and puffiness (salty food). So, before the celebration begins, try to eat as healthily as possible. Food rich in antioxidants can help you maintain a glowing skin!
Treat yourself to beauty treatments.
Dr. Pie: Derma treatments can help you maintain the at-home effort you do for your skin. You need to come in for total exfoliation of dead skin cells and for some treatments that can make pores appear smaller and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
RECOMMENDED DERMA TREATMENTS BY DR. PIE
Dr. Pie’s goal is to help you achieve the #NoFilter and #NoMakeupLook this Christmas. To do that, here are the top derma treatments that Dr. Pie recommends for you:
SILK SKIN FACIAL or ROYAL FACIAL
Dr. Pie: They are my favorite facial treatments that I do for myself and my go-to recommendation for patients because they make the skin feel instantly soft and smooth. All dead skin cells are completely removed, so the skin looks glowing with a glass skin effect. The treatments are also relaxing, so all the stress melts away along with excess oil, black/whiteheads, and dead skin cells.
DETOX DRIP
Dr. Pie: I do this treatment weekly, without fail. Concocting the glutathione drip with the addition of Vitamin C and Placenta is a powerful combination that takes care of the overall skin health. In addition, it helps boost the immune system too! Patients can easily do this while their facial treatment is ongoing, if they wish to cut the time being of being outside.
SAFYRE LASER
Dr. Pie: It is essential for the skin to shed off all dead skin cells to make room for new, healthier skin cells and to prevent lines from forming. Confidence Never Goes Out of Season
Posted on February 19, 2022 by Manny & Pie Calayan Clinic
Confidence is the ability to appreciate yourself and trust your own judgment and capabilities. Being confident is always in season and science says that confidence has a correlation with becoming more attractive and successful.
However, not everyone is gifted with inherent confidence and they need to build it up from scratch. There are many ways to build your confidence and self-esteem, others may even need extra support and assurance from others.
There are many things to celebrate about you, in case you forgot! Do you remember all the goals you set for yourself and actually achieved? Maybe you are good with creating art pieces and get praises for it. You may be dropping your mascara from your make-up routine because your eyelashes are naturally thick and full. Recalling things like this can help you realize that you are not a nobody.
While doing a self-check, you may notice those things you may not like about yourself. Don’t let this bring you down, rather, specify what you can change and what you cannot.
Some issues of low self-confidence and insecurity stem from not liking how you look, whether brought about by not knowing how to style yourself, body or skin concerns, and even aging. Physical insecurities can affect how we live from day to day and how we function within a relationship. It can hinder you from taking opportunities and limit your growth in many aspects of your life.
If it helps that you undergo some tweaking for you to be confident with your own body and comfortable in your skin, professional treatments and procedures are readily available. For instance, a trip to a dermatological clinic can help address body and skin issues. Dermatologists themselves have the confidence to make the correct diagnosis and create a holistic plan that you will need to achieve your dream body or healthier skin.
New found confidence after a treatment for acne, dark spots or wrinkles and procedures for slimming among many others can dramatically change your life dynamics. Your self-worth, however, should not be narrowed down to how you look because you are more than that!
To further bolster your self-image, here are some tips to help you work on yourself.
- Outgrow your tendencies to self-sabotage
Being too familiar with your struggles can hinder building your confidence and self-acceptance. Say goodbye to your “I’m not enough” or “I’m not beautiful” thoughts, and practice positive affirmations. Compliment yourself and give credit and validation to your big and small achievements.
- Be willing to take risks
Confident people have immense trust in themselves and they do what it takes to make themselves better. Take risks with trying new things, you might find an activity that you are passionate about that can motivate you to learn new skills and boost your confidence.
- Accept mistakes and learn from it
People who are genuinely confident admit their mistakes and are open to accepting help. They are not afraid of being corrected when they are wrong and do not see criticisms as personal attacks, because they see this as an opportunity to learn new things and perspectives.
- Set goals
Confidence can, eventually, run out if you are constantly faced with failures and criticisms. Set small to big goals and plan how and when you want to achieve these. Challenge yourself and seek small victories every now and then to build your confidence and motivation.
Gaining confidence does not happen overnight, so always remember to celebrate you and your growth. Confidence is a power; embrace this and you will be able to attract opportunities and take on any challenge. Cheers to being you!
Safe Summer Preparation Tips
Posted on March 5, 2022 by Manny & Pie Calayan Clinic
Summer is around the corner and that means it will be scorching hot in the next few months for our tropical country. Whether you have plans to visit our gorgeous beaches or planning to stay wherever you currently are, we would like to equip you with tips to keep your skin safe while you enjoy your summer!
SPF here, SPF there
Don’t leave home without applying SPF where your skin is exposed – we mean it! That denotes applying sunscreen on your face, arms and legs, feet, ears and using balms with SPF for your lips. Apply a broad-spectrum SPF to protect yourself from UVA and UVB rays which can damage the different layers of the skin. Use daily before leaving any shaded place and re-apply throughout the day, especially when you sweat or go for a swim. Doing this will prevent sunburn, slow premature aging and avoid the risk of skin cancer.
Moisture is key
“Do I really have to moisturize when my body feels sticky and when my face feels oily?” is something we hear a lot. The answer is yes! Excessive heat can dry out your skin and to prevent this from happening, your body will step up its production of sebum to keep it from being dehydrated. Using moisturizer on damp skin helps lock moisture, promotes healthy cell turnover and creates a barrier against free radicals. To keep it lightweight, you can use a gel-based moisturizer that is easily absorbed by the skin or one that doubles with SPF so the products don’t pile up.
Keep your skin clean
The hot weather makes sweating buckets easier – and this can make dust and dirt easily stick to the damp skin, clogging pores. It is, therefore, important to use cleansers (we prefer hydrating ones!) to remove dirt, excess oil and sweat on the skin. Make sure to gently massage, not scrub, the cleanser into your skin. Be wary not to over cleanse as this can strip off the skin’s natural oils – we advise to wash twice a day.
Protect even your hair
Did you know that even your hair takes sun damage? Sun rays, chlorine from pools, salt from natural bodies of water can damage and dry out the hair, causing roughness and dullness. Avoid brittle and frayed hair by wearing a hat when going outdoors and use hair products that have SPF in it. Cap off the day using hair treatments that restores the hair’s shine and bounce.
Did you get all that? Enjoyment comes with needed precaution so you can delight in the moment fully! We hope these tips prepare you for your much-deserved summer vacation. Have fun in the sun!
Expert Tips from Dr. Pie for Safe Laser Hair Removal
Posted on March 19, 2022 by Manny & Pie Calayan Clinic
Laser hair removal – it is an investment. To get the best results, one session will not simply cut it. Make sure you can cover costs and set aside time and effort for this procedure – no buts as consistency is key! This procedure saves you money in the long run as it inhibits hair growth for a longer period of time. Saves you from the “ouchies” too from wax removal or the itchy bumps from shaving/razors.
Do you think you’re ready for laser hair removal? Let’s jump right in with expert tips so you get the best from your laser hair removal treatment!
Check in with your preferred clinic the type of laser hair removal they offer.
Older types of laser machine used to only be safe for lighter skin tones as these target even the pigment of darker skin tone on top of the pigment in the hair.
New advancements have addressed this, making newer machines cater to all skin colors without damaging the skin. This is great news for most Filipinos’ with moreno skin tone!
No bleaching, waxing, or tweezing the area one month prior to your sessions.
Laser hair removal works by emitting light which the pigment in the hair absorbs to slow down future hair growth. Without the bulb and pigment, the procedure will not work. Go au naturel before each session to make sure that the follicle and hair shaft are intact.
Don’t miss a session.
Results are obvious even after your first session of laser hair removal, but this doesn’t mean you are good to go for the rest of the year. Your sessions are strategically spaced apart, usually 4-8 weeks, so it can best target the hair depending on which growth phase it is and which area of the body. If you do miss a session, don’t panic and return to the same clinic so they can plan out how to best address this little boo-boo and still give you the best, flawless result.
Avoid sun exposure after your sessions.
The area where the laser hair removal treatment has been done needs time to heal. While your goal is to be hair-free for summer, avoid excessive sun exposure and more so, sunbathing. Your skin is more sensitive to UV rays and prone to hyperpigmentation after treatment. If unavoidable, make sure to use sunscreen and cover up.
